Job Description

Department Overview:

Energy & Facilities (E&F) operates and manages Harvard’s energy supplies, district energy plants, and utility infrastructures on the Cambridge/Allston campuses, as well as a 24/7 facilities-related call, alarm monitoring, and dispatch center. E&F provides a broad portfolio of labor-based services, including building maintenance, landscaping, and custodial services to a large portion of the University, as well as engineering, technical, and sustainability services.

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) a department within E&F, offers primary building maintenance, landscape, fire safety, custodial and event support services to Harvard schools and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with regulatory requirements and customer-determined standards.

Position Description:

  • Installs, modifies, and repairs all types of cooling and refrigeration systems and auxiliary equipment.
  • Fabricates, installs, modifies and repairs related pressure piping systems.
  • Reclaims and recycles all types of refrigerants.
  • Diagnoses and assists in the repair of related DDC and pneumatic control systems.
  • Interprets mechanical plans and prints and updates as necessary.
  • Provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance and operations.
  • Assists and advises customers on maintenance solutions and provides follow-up on progress and status of work.
  • Performs other core skills of the trade and related duties as required.
  • May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance and direction of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up a minimum of 50 lbs. and transport piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. with others.
  • May use chain falls and come alongs for heavier lifting.
  • Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as listed.
  • Must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time and work on hands and knees and other awkward positions for extended periods, routinely walk to and from various buildings carrying tools, equipment and other essentials to the job site.
  • Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work of ladders, staging, lifts, etc.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current MA State Refrigeration license.
  • Current CFC Universal Certification.
  • Five years related experience in refrigeration and related controls work.
  • Previous experience in the installation, operation, trouble-shooting, maintenance and repair of all types of commercial grade cooling and refrigeration systems.
  • Previous experience with the operation and service of related DDC (Johnson and Siemens) and pneumatic control systems.
  • Must possess a valid State driver’s license and satisfactory driving history.

Additional Qualifications & Skills:

  • Must be able to read and interpret detailed plans, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with peers and customers.

Special Requirements:

  • Must observe and comply with all standard safety codes and practices, perform work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards
  • Must supply a complete set of hand tools.
  • Must be willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
  • May be required for specialized training in the inspection and maintenance of autoclaves and sterilizing equipment.
  • May be required to pass a Respiratory Physical and certification for use of a respirator.
  • Required to wear/use appropriate safety clothing/equipment at all times.
  • Required to properly wear a uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.
  • A current address and telephone number must be provided as an ongoing condition of employment.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Current MA State Refrigeration license
  • Current CFC Universal Certification
  • Valid state driver's license

  • Monday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
  • Tuesday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
  • Wednesday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

  • Friday: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
  • Saturday: OFF

Standard Hours/Schedule:

  • 40 hours per week

Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable):

  • $50.82 per hour
