Assistant Professor- Molecular Biomarkers of Exercise

The University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, appointment stream research faculty position in the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition at the rank of assistant professor. This position is dependent on at least 85% faculty effort on research grants/contracts. The candidate will work in the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory/Warrior Human Performance Research Center.

  • Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Exercise Physiology or a related field
  • Expertise in the areas of cellular and molecular exercise physiology and laboratory techniques, exercise biomarkers, and tissue crosstalk (i.e., muscle-bone)
  • Expertise in the area of extracellular vesicle biology, including measurement of abundance, contents, and functional impact
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting large-omic datasets.
  • Multi-disciplinary experience in integrating cellular and molecular mechanisms and data with phenotypic, physiological, and psychological data.
  • Demonstrate independent ability to design and execute experiments, data collection, analyze & interpret results, and publish and present research findings in a professional scientific manner
  • Experience in scientific writing (manuscripts and grant proposals)
  • Experience with laboratory and military field training studies
  • Demonstrate an excellent record-keeping of research work

The chosen candidate will be an active, leading member of the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory team and will work across multiple projects as well as develop their own research projects and grant proposals. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for a limited teaching load within the Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition and will develop a curriculum focused on how cellular and molecular concepts can be used in the fields of exercise physiology, athletics, rehabilitation, and injury prevention. The candidate will lead and continue to develop the laboratories biomarker analysis capabilities and should have familiarity with a wide range of circulating biomarkers of stress, injury, and exercise including cytokines, myokines/exerkines, stress and sex hormones and novel circulating factors (extracellular vesicles (EVs), cfDNA, RNAs etc.…). The candidate should have proficiency and extensive experience in cellular and molecular assays, including but not limited to cell culture and related assays (bone, muscle, and 3D cultures), immunoblotting, ELISAs, RT-qPCR, EV analysis, multiplex analyses, and immunocytochemistry. Additionally, the candidate will need proficiency in analyzing and interpreting -omic datasets (metabolomics, proteomics, (small)RNA seq, genomics, epigenetics). The individual will work and foster collaborations in and outside of the University to help advance the scientific capabilities and goals of the Laboratory.
