Preferred Qualifications
Experience in higher education, health care, or a related complex organizational environment is preferred. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and/or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) are highly preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s Office of Information Security is seeking to hire a Chief Information Security Officer. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

Essential Functions

These are the job duties required of the position.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for comprehensive information security across the University.
  • Leads information security planning in establishing a comprehensive information security program for the University in support of Academic, Research, Administrative and Health Systems processes and information systems.
  • Develops and drives a long-term information security roadmap aligned with the University’s strategic goals.
  • Develops, maintains, and enforces security standards, procedures, and guidelines that uphold the University’s overarching security plan and policies.
  • Proactively identifies and addresses potential exposures to accidental or intentional destruction, disclosure, modification, or interruption of information that could cause serious financial or informational loss.
  • Coordinates and performs security reviews, risk assessments, risk management, policy standards and guidelines, security awareness and training, audit coordination, and project management.
  • Articulates and communicates IT security policies and best practices clearly and effectively to the entire University community.
  • Serves as the primary contact and lead for all significant information security incidents.
  • Develops, maintains, and regularly tests the University’s Security Incident Response Plan.
  • Coordinates information security efforts closely with University IT staff, Internal Audit, Risk Management, Compliance, and University legal staff to ensure a unified and effective response.
  • Leads the development and execution of a clear, multi-year Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) strategy and roadmap, ensuring its alignment with overall university research objectives and its compliance with all applicable federal standards.
  • Responsible for selecting and implementing appropriate security technologies that adhere to federal security control requirements, specifically those outlined in NIST SP 800-171 and, where applicable, NIST SP 800-172, ensuring protection for all CUI enclaves.
  • Provides periodic, metrics-driven reporting on information security posture, risks, and incident trends to the Associate Vice President Finance & Administration/CIO.
  • Supervises and mentors Information Security staff, fostering their growth and ensuring the team’s effectiveness.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for any contracted external security consulting services and/or vendors, ensuring they meet campus needs and contractual requirements.
  • Remains on 24-hour call for problem determination and corrective action.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
  • Related duties as required.
