JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Processes specimen collection following protocols for a high-volume OBGYN physician practice, including, but not limited to, pap smears, Group B Strep, biopsies and STD testing. Registers these patients, along with placing orders, processing and registering the specimens.
Performs OBGYN venipuncture or skin puncture, following OBGYN practice and laboratory protocols for specimen handling, containers, transport and patient preparation. Verifies information regarding test requested and patient identification according to the practice protocol. Performs, registers, and processes stat and scheduled draws.
Performs, registers, processes, and tracks Obstetric labs, including, but not limited to, glucose challenges, New Prenatal Labs, hypertensive prenatal labs, pregnancy loss collection, in addition to all other specialty labs.
Orders, processes, charges, registers, and tracks all OBGYN physician practice specimens and labs. Follows and tracks all labs and specimens with either the JMH lab or with the outside vendor. Maintains a log and/or a system to organize copies of lab/specimen orders. Tracks all OBGYN orders to ensure the results are completed in a timely manner and are assigned to the correct provider. Communicates with the provider when need be regarding these results. Follows through with direction from the provider regarding any necessary follow-up labs and/or letters that need to be sent to the patient.
Works with outside vendors and oversees specialty labs. Works through the vendor’s website, in person, and over the phone to ensure proper supplies, ordering, tracking processing, results and shipping of these specialty OBGYN labs, including, but not limited to, NIPS, Carrier Testing, Prenatal labs and Cancer screenings.
Processes all pap smears through the office, then tracks these pap results for up to a year, depending on the results. Sends normal pap cards/letters to the patient. Tracks abnormal pap results for each individual patient, up to the lifetime of the patient, the lifetime of the abnormal results, or until directed by a provider, and follows-up with patient for scheduling and compliance with appointments.
Works as a liaison between the OBGYN physician practice and the lab to ensure all labs and specimens are processed and within a timely manner. Coordinates and performs pick-up and drop-off times for specimens with the lab.
Performs clerical work which includes registration of the patient, registration and processing the requisitions/orders, printing orders, labeling specimens and review of the labs and specimens so that they are complete for testing and coordinates these registrations/specimens with the lab.
Registers patients with outside vendors and maintains a tracking system for these lab results. Coordinates pick up times for these specialty labs with Fed Ex to ensure they are picked up same day for accurate results. Communicates with the outside reps with any patient or client issues to ensure a resolution.
Performs clerical work including ordering, scanning, charging, crediting, and canceling of requisitions in the EMR system when necessary in a timely manner.
Oversees and maintains clinical staff competencies for point of care testing, phlebotomy competencies and laboratory equipment. Updates these annual competencies and completes initial competencies with existing and new clinical staff.
Maintains cleanliness of the office lab areas, Continues to stay up to date on policies and procedures to ensure all the laboratory testing and area stays HFAP compliant.
Responsible for the office laboratory supply orders, daily calibration, proper storage, temperature logs, and point of care testing following all HFAP requirements.
Assists Practice Administrator with processes regarding laboratory issues, including, but not limited to, point of care testing, specimen handling, draws, and logs. Also assists with laboratory items are completed in an efficient and timely manner.
Identifies issues in the laboratory area of the office, along with areas for improvement and communicates this with the Practice Administrator.
Performs additional duties as required assigned by the Practice Administrator and as it relates to the practice.
Clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of JMH.
Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and JMH policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions, Plans for Hazardous Materials, Blood Borne Pathogens, Fire Safety and Disaster Plans.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
High School Diploma or equivalent required; course work in Phlebotomy required. Certified Phlebotomist (ASCP, AMT, NCA, ASPT) or Certified Medical Assistant required. Minimum of two years of phlebotomy experience required. Experience in the OBGYN office preferred. Experience with office equipment and medical terminology required.
