Reporting to the President, this position will lead the Catapult Accounting Department and manage all accounting functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other reporting requirements, in support of the Company’s current and future oil & gas business activities across all domestic basins and states. The position will work collaboratively with the Engineering, Finance, Land, and Data Analytics departments, as well as parent company (NACCO Natural Resources and NACCO Industries) Accounting, Financial Reporting, Internal Audit, and outside audit professionals to support overall Company objectives. Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Lead and develop the Catapult Accounting department and employees to achieve Company, department, and employee goals. Manage the administrative functions of the Catapult Accounting Department, including coordination and review of accounting tasks, employee performance reviews, internal and interdepartmental communication of essential information and project status, compliance with Company policies and procedures, and planning for future growth.
- Take ownership of Catapult’s accounting processes and systems, oversee daily transactions (general ledger entries, accruals, reconciliations, and intercompany transactions) along with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes in accordance with GAAP, industry best practices, and public company standards.
- Coordinate financial reporting and internal control compliance with the parent company. Design, implement, and improve internal controls, policies, and associated documentation. Serve as a primary contact for external and internal auditors, supporting quarterly reviews, year-end audits, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) testing.
- Design, implement, and optimize workflows, system automations, and internal processes for all lines of business, including mineral and royalty interests, non-operated working interests with Joint Interest Billing (JIB), equity investments, and any future diversifications, collaborating proactively with Catapult management, other Catapult departments, and the parent company accounting management team to ensure accounting practices and processes are aligned with business activities, providing for effective reporting and analysis.
- Coordinate with parent company accounting and tax departments, advising and assisting from an oil & gas accounting perspective, to ensure tax, reporting, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead and assist with special projects such as system integrations, new asset onboarding, and process optimization.
- Coordinate reporting for the parent company’s “Minerals Management” financial reporting segment, of which Catapult is the primary subsidiary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives of the Company.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong, extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SOX compliance, internal controls, public company reporting requirements and best practices, and the development of effective accounting processes/practices for the management of data from a variety of sources pertaining to software and accounting systems across multiple departments.
- Commitment to upholding financial integrity and internal control standards with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven proficiency in oil & gas accounting: revenue recognition, JIB, severance tax, depletion, and cost recovery. Broad understanding and familiarity with industry topics and functions outside of specific expertise, including mineral acquisitions, upstream development, engineering, and land.
- Demonstrated effective leadership with strategic thinking and meticulous attention to detail, able to articulate vision, mentor, train, develop, and inspire employees to improve skills, cultivate strengths, and maintain high standards.
- Experience with key industry systems such as Enverus, EnergyLink, MineralSoft, oil & gas accounting software and Excel-based workflows; specific experience with JD Edwards highly desirable.
- High fluency in common software tools with advanced spreadsheet skills, experience with BI tools such as Tableau, an understanding of effective analytics, and familiarity/comfort working to develop/integrate multi-disciplinary systems. Specific experience with Salesforce, Alteryx, and coding is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills at varying levels of technical detail to collaborate and lead in a multi-disciplined team, internally and externally. Strong and effective presentation and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate with Management, peers, other departments, vendors, and other audiences, as necessary.
- Experience directing individual and employee work flow to meet Company needs, balance and prioritize short- and long-term projects alongside daily tasks, and reconcile department priorities with overall Company strategy or objectives to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
- “See the forest and the trees.” Able to evaluate complex issues and propose a range of solutions; must be able work independently with little to no supervision; high degree of professionalism, judgment, responsiveness and dependability are a must.
- Desire and ability to think independently, take ownership, and drive continuous improvement of self, team, and Company, with the confidence and initiative to take on new tasks, develop solutions to solve problems, advocate for or make key decisions, and pursue new opportunities when appropriate.
Required Education, Training, Experience
- Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field; CPA preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive oil & gas accounting experience, including:
- 2+ years in leadership/supervisory roles
- Public accounting experience
- Direct experience with SOX compliance (particularly in the design, implementation, and documentation of internal controls over financial reporting in a public company or similar reporting environment)
- Extensive experience in systems managing of data from various sources and development of accounting processes, procedures and controls
- Strong preference given to experience with mineral and royalty companies and non-operated working interests.
