Position: Program Specialist - Leadership in Action

Unit: Part-Time MCCC Professional Staff

Department: Student Affairs Division, Student Development Department

Reports to: Director of Student Engagement for Equity

General Summary: The Program Specialist provides primary support for the "Leadership in Action" - Paul Sullivan Leadership Institute, a year-long leadership development program designed to cultivate emerging leaders through community engagement, professional growth, and civic involvement. The institute is modeled after Lowell's Public Matters and grounded in social change theory; this experience empowers students to lead with purpose and impact. This program serves as a pathway to becoming a paid Presidential Ambassador. Presidential Ambassadors represent the college on and off campus and is our highest level of leadership development. Open to both credited students and non-credit participants, the program Specialist is responsible for organizing logistics, recruitment and ensuring participation in events, communication with community partners, and coordinating the mentor component for eligible students. All duties are in collaboration with the Office of Student Engagement and the President's Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all students are assigned a community mentor related to their career goals or related leadership objectives by recruiting community partners, collecting student commitment contracts, and organizing related logistical needs.
  • Research community events and prepare a robust calendar of programs and activities correlating with the Leadership in Action curriculum; track student attendance and registration as needed.
  • Organize seminar experiences such as a Project Adventure trip, Service trips, mentor/etiquette dinner, and end of the year celebration.
  • Communicate with the Office of Student Engagement about all related expenses and ensure smooth purchasing, catering requests, and payroll for guests as required.
  • Communicate with the President's Office about upcoming functions where student leaders are invited; share information with the students in the class and coordinate RSVPs.
  • Communicate with the Leadership Office about upcoming programs, conferences, and events that may be applicable to students in the class and their leadership assignments.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field; Master's Degree preferred
  • Strong organization and planning skills.
  • Experience with coordinating events.
  • Understand leadership theory and practice.
  • Appreciation for social change and community partnerships.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others and enjoy working with students.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, policies and procedures governing assigned College activities.
  • Commitment to working with students of diverse identities such as socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and veterans including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Proficiency in oral and written expression and computer usage including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher) and Collegiatelink.
  • An appreciation for the mission of Middlesex Community College.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize projects.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and to maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Bilingual skills a plus


Additional Information:

Salary Range: $35.31 per hour in accordance with MCCC PT salary grid

Location: Lowell campus with occasional travel to Bedford as needed

Hours: 18.5 per week, schedule to be determined upon hire

Expected Start Date: August 2025
