Title: ELL Learning Specialist

Unit: Part-Time MCCC Professional Staff

Department: Student Affairs Division, Academic Centers for Enrichment Department

Reports to: Director of Academic Support Programs

General Summary: The Part-Time ELL Learning Specialist is a knowledgeable, experienced and creative individual committed to inclusive excellence. The ELL Learning Specialist provides appropriate research- based knowledge of language acquisition assistance to academic support staff and faculty supporting the development of English Language Learner (ELL) students' academic literacy. Additionally, the Language Learning Specialist is responsible for the oversight of ELL tutoring for individualized and group student learning sessions in the ACE Tutoring Centers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the training, supervision and the evaluation of ACE Student Leaders in accordance with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and International Center Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) Guidelines.
  • Train all ACE Student Leaders in the best practices for working with ELL students. Encourage student leaders who are ELLs themselves to share their experience through leadership opportunities.
  • Collaborate and communicate with all faculty to build academic support partnerships.
  • Support other Learning Specialists, ACE Student Leaders and faculty by providing resources and opportunities for working with ELL students.
  • Provide ongoing professional development to support staff and faculty in the integration of ELL teaching strategies and cultural awareness for the facilitation of learning.
  • Work with faculty creating reading and writing across the curriculum assignments to develop and use appropriate ELL literacy strategies, implementation plans, and assessment tools.
  • Collaborate with the Asian American Advancement Program to develop programming for Asian American students learning English with regularly scheduled check-ins to hold them accountable for their learning.
  • Provide small group and individualized language and cultural awareness tutoring to students enrolled in college credit courses at Middlesex Community College.
  • Provide language support in areas other than writing such as pronunciation, grammar, and American stylistic awareness.
  • Maintain ELL resources on our ACE Google Classroom
  • Maintain student-specific data relative to academic support services using Navigate and Blackboard
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or relevant field of study
  • Knowledge of best practices working with, supported by, or evident in, a combination of experience and education in ESL
  • Experience in developing and/or in delivering Structured English Immersion (SEI) or Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) training.
  • Knowledge of tutoring techniques and learning strategies.
  • Experience working with community college students with limited English proficiency and students enrolled in developmental classes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Education, Linguistics, or related field of study
  • Experience working with secondary or post-secondary environment diverse populations, especially underprepared, disadvantaged, and non-traditional students.
  • Knowledge of small group and peer tutoring methodologies.
  • Bilingual skills a plus


Additional Information:

Hourly Rate: $35.31 per hour in accordance with the part-time MCCC wage schedule

Location: Primary work location is on the Lowell Campus. Occasional assignments on the Bedford Campus will be required.

Hours: Approximately 18.5 hours per week, schedule to be determined upon hire. Approximate employment period: 40 weeks per year.
