Position Summary:

The Laboratory Technician will ensure all tests and experiments are carried out effectively and accurately. This position will be responsible for ensuring compliance with safety regulations, appropriate standards (ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, etc.), and assisting in the preparation of reports and presentations. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform field and/or laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials (e.g. soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel)
  • Communicate with project manager, engineering technicians, client representative, contractor’s representative and others as applicable regarding the construction site, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection requirements and results  
  • Transport material samples with associated identifying documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis 
  • Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observation in the form of written and digital reports as work is performed for daily transmittal to the Field Services Team Lead
  • Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles and work areas   
  • May assist with scheduling and dispatch of Technicians to project sites  
  • Under close supervision of higher-level technicians or staff professionals, learn and assist with tasks and perform basic testing and observations duties
  • Provide clear documentation of findings and results 
  • Communicate information to Project Manager and discuss accuracy of data in preparation for submittal 
  • Submit documentation and communicate results as directed by the Project Manager
  • Maintain assigned equipment
  • Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Perform pre- task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management
  • Responsible for maintaining quality standards and strict safety standards on all projects 
  • Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the company’s discretion

Special Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Effective communication skills for positive interaction with project team members and clients
  • Exceptional organizational abilities and adept at handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Capable of conducting lab testing tasks, including lifting heavy equipment and samples
  • Able to perform duties involving prolonged standing and repetitive movements
  • Proficient in completing assignments within specified guidelines and deadlines
  • Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in construction materials testing and inspection services preferred
  • Proficient in interpreting and adhering to ASTM/AASHTO standards, preferred

License and Certification:

  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history

Duties involved require moving materials that weigh up to 25-50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 85 pounds on an occasional basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines. At times, bending, reaching, standing, and walking are required.
