Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate: Social Vulnerability to Environmental Hazards
Description:
The Center for Policy Research on Energy and the Environment at Princeton University invites applications for a postdoctoral or more senior researcher to conduct spatial quantitative research on social vulnerability to hazards. The researcher will have the opportunity to work on multiple projects, investigating (a) cumulative environmental impacts, (b) the use of census microdata for social vulnerability modeling, and (c) population and built environment exposure to climate hazards. The broad agenda of this research is assessing the fitness of geospatial indicators to inform conceptual and policy-relevant understanding of vulnerability processes for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. The researcher will report to Professor Eric Tate at Princeton University and may collaborate with Dr. Christopher Emrich at the University of Central Florida. The appointment will be through Princeton's School of Public and International Affairs. The research position requires a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., geography, urban planning, data science, sociology, public health). Ideal applicants will have:*Expertise conducting spatial and statistical analyses*Experience with scientific computer programming in R and Python*Formal training or experience applying quantitative and spatial methods to human-environment questions*Excellent academic writing and communication skills in English*Strong publication record (relative to degree timing)*Collaborative spirit in interacting with postdoctoral and PhD researchers on the team*Interest in developing and applying Large Language Models (LLM) and spatial Machine Learning (ML) modelsSalary and full employee benefits are offered in accordance with Princeton University guidelines. The Term of appointment is based on rank. Positions at the postdoctoral rank are for one year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding; those hired at more senior ranks may have multi-year appointments. Professional development support includes opportunities for conference and workshop participation, and mentoring based on an Individual Development Plan generated by the researcher.The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University. Expected Salary Range: $65,000 - $73,000
The University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, work experience, education/training, key skills, market, collective bargaining agreements as applicable, and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The posted salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate for a full-time position; salaries for part-time positions are pro-rated accordingly.
