https://www.geology.pitt.edu/?invites applications for a Research Associate Professor position.? We are seeking a talented and creative research scientist to teach classes in Structural Geology, Planetary Geology, and GIS, and conduct research on the evolution of orogenic systems.???

This appointment will work closely with the Pitt Tectonics research group of Professor Nadine McQuarrie, studying the geometry, kinematic evolution, exhumation, and topographic development of both compressional and extensional orogenic systems. The research focus of the Tectonics group at the University of Pittsburgh is examining the geometric, kinematic, and erosional evolution of compressional mountain belts and extensional systems. Current research activities focus on linking the geometry and kinematics of mapped structures to thermochronometer cooling ages to look at the interplay between tectonics and erosion on exhumation patterns and morphology of mountain ranges.??A Ph.D. in Geoscience with a focus on tectonics and/or structural geology is required.???

This is a 3-year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal annually, and is in the non-tenured appointment stream with promotion potential.?? The start date is January 5, 2026.?

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:?

• Maintaining a 2-2 teaching load that will include Structural Geology, Geology of the Planets, and two additional courses that can include History of the Earth, Sedimentology and stratigraphy, The Planets, Geology, GIS or as needed by the department.
• Formulate and design studies, write proposals, interpret complex data, and publish results in the peer-reviewed literature.?
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, train and supervise students and other group members, supervise detrital or thermochronologic sample preparation and analysis

The successful candidate will:?

• While the candidate’s specific research directions are flexible, the position will broadly focus on the evolution of orogenic systems.
• Maintaining accurate and comprehensive files documenting field work, modeling analyses, results, and outlining workflow is critical as is displaying data and model output graphically.??

Minimum qualifications for the Research Associate Professor position include:?

• A Ph.D. in Geoscience with a focus on tectonics and/or structural geology is required.?
• Candidates should have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
• Candidates should have applied for and obtained external funding.
• Familiarity with GIS.???

Preferred qualifications for Research Assistant Professor include:??

• Experience in structural field work, mapping, and cross-section analyses
• Familiarity with obtaining and analyzing detrital geochronologic and thermochronologic data.???

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating excellent teamwork, organizational, and communication skills, and who are excited to join a highly collaborative environment.??This role is designated as on-site and requires incumbents to report to work at the University of Pittsburgh. The position requires moderate standing, walking, lifting, and computer-based tasks.?
