Overview

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) remains a major problem of extremely premature infants worldwide, affecting about 12,000 infants each year in the USA. There is no treatment to minimize cortical damage, white matter injury, or hydrocephalus in the survivors with IVH. We employ genetic and pharmacological strategies in our rabbit and mouse model to minimize brain injury and improve neurological outcomes.  These studies are of immense translational significance.

Responsibilities

We have a neonatal rabbit and a mouse model of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Our rabbit experiments include performing C-section to deliver E29 rabbit kits, care for and feed them for up to 3 weeks. At E29, we induce IVH and determine the severity of IVH by head ultrasound. We employ genetic and pharmacological strategies to minimize brain injury and promote neurological recovery.

Perform a moderate number of simple or moderate technical procedures including:

  • Helping with C-section
  • Feeding rabbit pups on weekdays and 1-2 times during the weekend (equal turns as by other lab members).
  • Euthanizing animals and making frozen blocks
  • Immunohistochemistry.
  • Western blot analyses
  • RNA extraction and RT-PCR
  • Injecting blood into the mouse brain

They will:

  • Require occasional guidance
  • Occasionally be responsible for ordering routine supplies
  • Rarely modify technical procedures
  • Rarely train other lab members
  • Rarely guide other lab members;
  • A simple/ limited understanding of scientific literature and the research goals and rationale is required
  • Occasionally analyze data
  • Rarely interpret data

Qualifications

  • Required to have at least a Bachelor's Degree in a related science or equivalent skills and related experience, and zero to two years of related experience

Preferred:

  • 1 to 2 years experience with tissue culture, mouse bleeding and surgery molecular biology and assays preferred
  • Background in Molecular Biology a plus
  • Laboratory courses in Biology or chemistry or biochemistry/molecular biology preferred

Time and duration: 30 hours a week for 6 months which will includes Tuesdays and some weekends.
