Here at Dayton Job Corps Center, we support their mission by teaching eligible young people, the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education. Students here have access to room and board while they learn skills in specific training areas for up to three years. The program helps them to complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, provides transitional support services, and assists them with obtaining employment. Job Corps graduates either enter the workforce or an apprenticeship, go on to higher education, or join the military.

Purpose: Reports to the Counseling Manager. Responsible for coordinating and implementing the Career Preparation Period (CPP) program for students, in compliance with government and management directives. Creates and presents lessons designed to help students develop skills for long-term employability and prepare for success. Provides instruction in diverse classes and activities.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Provides career skills instruction to students from approved curricula involving employability, transition to center life, workplace communications, diversity, wellness, parenting, and social skills.
  • Assists new students in acclimating to center; provides career exploration and career planning to all new students and facilitates the implementation of all other CPP requirements.
  • Plans, prepares, and implements instructional units, including labor market information (LMI). 
  • Monitors student progress: case notes services provided, progress in program and coaching/discussions pertinent to services in the Center Information System (CIS).
  • Provides basic personal and career counseling to students.
  • Provides support to students struggling with retention/commitment to the program, including referral to other areas for support. 
  • Controls the use of materials and equipment.
  • Provides professional feedback in student evaluations, both in the center Information System (CIS) and through a Pre-panel with each individual student.
  • Make recommendations for policy and curriculum revision. 
  • Keeps records and prepares reports as required. 
  • Assists in the planning and scheduling of courses. 
  • Measures the progress of students through observation and the administration of oral and written assessments.
  • Makes recommendations concerning future studies and training needs. 
  • Facilitates the use of Traitify and Level All by students during CPP. 
  • Assists, monitors, and updates student development of Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP) and SMART goals.
  • Models, mentors, and monitors the positive normative culture of the center.
  • Acts as a responsible custodian for the assigned center property. 
  • Reports violations of unethical behavior.
  • Suggests opportunities for continuous operational improvement and a reduction of waste. 
  • Identifies and reports on environmental health and safety concerns.
  • Able to teach Basic First Aid training. 
  • Creates a relationship between the student and Career One Stop.
  • Supports Green Energy Initiatives.
  • Teaches impact of social media on mental health and employability.
  • Able to maintain a 75% or higher on employee scorecard.

Requirements

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred in education or special education.
  • Associate degree with experience in field of career skills acceptable. Highschool diploma required.

Experience: 

  • One year’s experience in a related field
  • Experience working with youth preferred.

Skills/Abilities: 

  • Ability to evaluate center services for students, recommend modifications for improvement, participate in career plan planning, and provide updated information on the CPP program.
  • Positive, quality customer services to students, staff, and other center customers
  • Willingness to participate in student employability programs and activities.
  • Ability to support, promote, and enforce Job Corps’ Zero Tolerance Policy
  • Ability to promote the Career Success Standards (CSS) by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students when necessary, and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Computer proficiency

Minimum Eligibility Qualifications 

  • If the position requires driving, a valid driver's license in the state of employment with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • I-9 documentation required to verify authorization to work in the United States
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check and drug test.
