As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Pacific Islands Regional Marine Debris Communication and Outreach Coordinator to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Marine Debris Program (MDP) within the Office of Response and Restoration.

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator plays a vital role in advancing public awareness and understanding of marine debris issues through communication and outreach strategies specific to the Pacific Islands and West Coast of the United States. This position involves creating, managing, and enhancing educational materials, coordinating outreach activities, and supporting strategic communication initiatives within the program. The Pacific Islands Regional Marine Debris Communication and Outreach Coordinator collaborates closely with the MDP Communications Team, regional coordinators, and external partners to strengthen educational strategies and promote environmental stewardship in the Pacific Island Region.



Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, coordinate, and conduct outreach, education, and public relations activities with the public, school groups and industry partners focused on marine debris.
  • Support the planning and implementation of the interagency Hawai'i Marine Debris Action Plan (and other regional marine debris related plans) by assisting in regular communication with partners and setting up meetings and workshops as needed.
  • ­Provide support to the Pacific Islands Regional Coordinator on marine debris related projects, activities, and actions in the Pacific Islands.
  • ­Support the MDP communications team with national outreach and communication activities, including preparation of presentation and outreach documents, developing blog and website content, formatting reports, copy/editing documents, accessibility, and supporting education and media efforts.
  • Support the West Coast Regional Coordinators with grantee coordination, outreach, education, and communication activities, including preparation and review of presentations, outreach and education materials, and reports.
  • ­Provide support and assistance for severe marine debris events in the Pacific Islands Region, as needed.
  • Seek opportunities to collaborate with other NOAA offices in the region on marine debris activities.
  • Provide other assistance to MDP as needed.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Environmental Science, Communications, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in developing, coordinating, and delivering communication or outreach programs and products in environmental science or related topics.
  • Experience translating scientific information into plain language and developing engaging content for different audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce and review high-quality educational content.
  • Ability to work on your own, as well as collaboratively with a wide range of individuals and within teams.
  • Experience managing multiple projects at one time.
  • Familiarity with a variety of digital platforms, such as web software, social media, and newsletters, and ability/interest in learning new technology/software.
  • Experience with the Adobe Suite is preferred.
  • Experience working in the Pacific Islands or with partners in the region is preferred.
