General Summary

The Washtenaw County/Eastern Michigan University Legal Resource Center (LRC), located in the Washtenaw County Courthouse, is a non-profit charitable organization staffed by a supervising attorney and paralegal students who provide and assist patrons in filling out appropriate legal forms for civil matters such as: divorce, child custody, personal protection orders, small claims, landlord tenant disputes, probate, paternity or adult guardianship. In addition, the staff provides information on various legal procedures for navigating the court system.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Supervising Attorney and Manager Job Description
The Employee's duties and performance expectations/standards shall include, but not be limited to the following:

Daily operations of Legal Resource Center

  • Direct and administer total operation of LRC.
  • Serve as notary for LRC.
  • Maintenance of supplies for LRC.
  • Billing of supplies to LRC Board.
  • Collect fees and donations for LRC.
  • Create financial reports for LRC Board.
  • Collecting voluntary demographic information from LRC patrons for the Board of Directors' use.
  • Coordinate with Washtenaw County staff regarding the continued use of LRC office.

Supervision of EMU paralegal students.

  • Scheduling EMU paralegal students to ensure they are obtaining the hours and experiences required by their academic program.
  • Aiding EMU paralegal students in providing services to LRC patrons.
  • Providing services to LRC patrons when EMU paralegal students are unable or unavailable.
  • Maintain policy manual for EMU paralegal students, outlining standard practices and expectations for students.
  • Review phone and email correspondence between EMU paralegal students and LRC patrons.

In addition to the sole responsibilities outlined above, employee will be responsible in aiding Engage@EMU staff in the following duties.

  • Exploring areas of expansion in LRC services.
  • Communication and marketing of LRC services.
  • Exploring fundraising and grant funding opportunities.
  • Maintaining website for LRC.
  • Communication between Engage@EMU and Washtenaw County Court offices.

Minimum Qualifications:

Performance expectations/standards shall be based on:

  • Quality of service to LRC patrons.
  • Quality of supervision and academic experiences for EMU paralegal students.
  • Ability to positively collaborate with EMU Paralegal Studies program and LRC Board of Directors.

Additional Information:

Employee will be a consultant for the Engage@EMU office, supervised by Luke Yates or designated staff. Position will be based on EMU's academic calendar and will typically include 48 weeks of scheduled work with two two-week breaks between semesters when the LRC will be closed. The LRC will also be subject to close on holidays observed by the EMU academic calendar and Washtenaw County. Pay is hourly.
In addition, employee will make themselves available to:

  • EMU College of Technology Paralegal Studies program faculty on the basis of planning and discussing placement and experiences for EMU paralegal students and providing student reviews.
  • LRC Board of Directors on the overall mission and services of the LRC.
  • Washtenaw County government regarding LRC technology and facilities

On-Site Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. three days a week.

Off-Site Hours: student policy handbook; electronic communication between Engage@EMU, LRC Board of Directors, and/or EMU Paralegal students and faculty as needed.

Applicants must be legally certified lawyers in the State of Michigan.
