Outdoor & Adventure Pursuits Coordinator



As part of the Student Affairs Wellness team, Campus Recreation promotes the overall health and wellness of our community by providing inclusive recreational and fitness opportunities. The Outdoor & Adventure Pursuits (OAP) Coordinator is responsible for developing, administering, organizing, marketing, and assessing OAP programs, culminating in a comprehensive annual calendar of diverse activities that reflect the needs, interests, and desires of the Pitt community.

Key Responsibilities: Student Program Leadership and Management: Oversee the planning and execution of outdoor and adventure recreation programs, trips, workshops, an indoor climbing wall, an outdoor recreation equipment rental center, and a bike shop. Program Administration: Manage operations, assessment, safety, and risk management protocols for all OAP offerings, with particular emphasis on mitigating risks related to high-liability areas such as the indoor climbing wall, outdoor trips, and the Bike Cave. Schedule facilities, recommend and purchase outdoor equipment, and oversee operational software supporting programs and services. Financial Oversight: Develop and monitor the budget for associated programs while ensuring stewardship in managing university funds to meet evolving needs. Campus Well-being Collaboration: Collaborate with partners across Student Affairs and the Wellness team to develop programs aligned with the eight pillars of well-being. Design inclusive outdoor experiences that help students reduce stress, build resilience, and improve their mental and physical well-being through nature-based engagement. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA): Ensure that programs, functions, and the work environment align with the University’s DEIA strategies.


Job Summary

Creates and implements high-risk intramural, club, fitness, and recreation programs. Creates and implements facilities operations plans including staffing, facilities scheduling, and facility, FFE, and fitness equipment maintenance. Develops program or facility operational mapping to align with strategic plans. Develops policies and procedures guiding operations and continuous improvement efforts. Develops and implements risk management protocols and training to ensure safety. Manages marketing, social media outreach, and updates web site.


Essential Functions

Create and implement outdoor and adventure pursuits programs as part of the Campus Recreation team. Develop and execute operational plans, including staffing, facility scheduling, and maintenance. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a large student staff to lead program activities. Develop metrics and mechanisms for evaluating and reporting program success. Assess and mitigate risks related to facility operations and programs by implementing comprehensive safety and risk management guidelines and training, with a focus on ensuring safety at the climbing wall, during outdoor trips, and in the Bike Cave. Ensure compliance with safety standards through equipment maintenance, adequate staff coverage, and comprehensive staff training. Support student mental health and resilience by offering programs that align with the University’s eight pillars of well-being and are intentionally designed to help students reduce stress and feel a greater sense of connection and belonging.


Physical Effort

Daily work includes administrative tasks as well as physical activities in high-use, participant-centric outdoor and adventure pursuits facilities. This role requires routine mobility within the office, facilities (indoor and outdoor), and around campus. Duties include:

Leading and teaching outdoor and adventure pursuits programs.

Frequent movement across spaces (e.g., walking 100+ yards multiple times per shift).

Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling items up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifting more than 50 pounds.

Performing physical actions such as running, jumping, lifting, hauling, climbing, twisting, kneeling, crawling, and reaching.

Availability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
