Job Description

Job Summary:

The Dean for Administration and Finance, reporting to the Danoff Dean of Harvard College, supports and sustains the overall financial budgeting and administrative services of the College’s units, including the Dean of Students Office, the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Office for the Arts, the Office of Student Services, the Phillips Brooks House Center for Public Service and Engaged Scholarship, and the Harvard College Dean’s Office. With oversight of the College’s operating budget, the Dean for Administration and Finance will advance institutional priorities and navigate challenges while improving operating efficiencies, facilitating collaboration, fostering a welcoming community, and managing expenses, assets, and resources.


Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management - Serve as Harvard College’s chief financial officer, working collaboratively with the Director of Finance, College offices, and FAS Finance for the overall financial management of Harvard College including: financial reporting, the annual College-wide budget process, multi-year planning process, systems of internal control, implementation of University wide and FAS policies and procedures, stewardship of College restricted resources and implementation of new financial and administrative systems within the College.

  • Financial Reporting and Budget Management - Lead resource planning and financial sustainability efforts for the College. Direct preparation of financial reporting and analysis. Provide the Danoff Dean with budgetary parameters within which to evaluate funding requests related to program development, new initiatives, and more.

  • Department Administration - Participate as a principal member and stakeholder of the College’s senior leadership team, and work with the Danoff Dean and other unit leaders to steward strategic planning efforts, collaborate with College administrators, faculty leadership, and other College staff to ensure that efforts are coordinated, and that resources are deployed in a manner consistent with the College’s goals, objectives, and finances. Establish workflows and timelines and monitor progress in advancing these priorities.

  • Resource Management - Oversee resource allocation and management of staff physical resources, to ensure that they are allocated in support of both Danoff Dean’s and the College senior leadership team’s top priorities.

  • Development - Work closely with the Danoff Dean and College unit leaders to analyze organizational priorities and identify areas where strategic fundraising could advance key initiatives. Act as a liaison to university development officers to help facilitate donor relations and uphold stewardship of gifts to the College.

  • Management -Lead the Administration and Finance team and directly supervise the Director of Finance and the Senior Administrative Coordinator. The Dean for Administration and Finance will work across college divisions, communicating performance expectations; and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. Leads and assembles cross College work teams focused on strategic priorities.
  • Human Resources - Key partner with HR colleagues dedicated to supporting Harvard College including strategic work related to organizational development, employee relations, recruitment and more.

  • IT – Oversee IT administration support functions in conjunction with University partners.


Working Conditions:

Harvard College has a minimim expectation of 3 days per week of on-campus work. The nature of this position may require additional days on-campus as well as occasional evening or weekend work.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 15 years of progressively responsible financial and administrative management experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Five + years of supervisory experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Graduate degree in related discipline
  • Record of accomplishment in strategic and financial planning, preferably in organizations undergoing change; strong business acumen and judgement; skill and creativity in managing through transition
  • Exellent analytic, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience serving as an advisor to senior leaders, adding value beyond the strict definition of the position; able to advise on financial and strategic issues, balancing rigor, structure, and effectiveness.
  • Proven ability to relate to and motivate individuals at all levels, build strategic relationships and effective teams, work and negotiate with a broad range of constituents, mediate competing interests and lead through influence as well as through direct authority
  • Experience in complex, academically based environments (e.g. healthcare, research, higher education) highly desirable

    Work Format Details

    This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
