Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, four years of progressively responsible experience in internal auditing or a related field, one of which included supervisory or project leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Strong understanding of audit methodology, internal controls, and risk management principles; proficiency with audit management software and Microsoft Office applications; ability to work independently, using initiative and sound judgment with minimal supervision; excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills; and demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and mentor other audit professionals in a collaborative environment are required.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) is preferred. Experience in higher education and/or healthcare is preferred.
Job Description Summary

Essential Functions

These are the job duties required of the position.

Essential Functions
  • Plays a critical leadership role within the Office of Internal Audit, responsible for leading and overseeing a range of audit engagements—spanning performance, operational, financial, compliance, and IT audits—across various USA campus and USA Health entities.
  • Ensures that all audit activities are conducted efficiently, effectively, and in full compliance with the Institute of Internal Auditors’ International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (the Standards) and the IIA Code of Ethics.
  • Plays a critical role in risk assessment, departmental improvement, and staff development while maintaining strong client and team relationships.
  • Leads and/or conducts performance, operational, financial, compliance, and IT audit engagements across various university and healthcare entities.
  • Performs all stages of audit work, including: conducting interviews and walkthroughs, documenting processes and internal controls, researching standards, guidelines, and criteria, executing tests and documenting findings, identifying issues, defining risks, and communicating recommendations, and preparing and reviewing written reports that are accurate, thorough, and easy to understand.
  • Plans and manages engagements to ensure timely completion, quality results, and alignment with audit goals and objectives.
  • Utilizes internal audit management software throughout the audit lifecycle.
  • Assists in the development of the risk-based annual internal audit plan by providing informed input based on internal and external risk indicators.
  • Participates in periodic risk assessments to help prioritize future audit coverage and consultative services.
  • Ensures all audit activities are in compliance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing and the IIA Code of Ethics.
  • Upholds the highest ethical standards and confidentiality in all assignments.
  • Actively contributes to the department’s Quality Assurance and Improvement Process (QAIP) by identifying areas for operational and procedural enhancement.
  • Supervise internal audit staff to include assigning duties, checking work, approving time off and timesheets, coaching and professional development, and preparing performance evaluations.
  • Fosters productive, team-oriented relationships with internal clients and other stakeholders.
  • Serves as a liaison and advisor during audits, maintaining open communication and building trust with departments under review.
  • Participates in organizational project teams or committees to lend subject matter expertise as needed.
  • Identifies issues and recommends appropriate process modifications and control improvements.
  • Resolves conflicts or concerns that arise during audit engagements with professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Uses effective verbal and written communication techniques including active listening, interviewing, and presentations to deliver findings and recommendations to management and leadership.
  • Attends professional conferences, workshops, or training events, which may occasionally require overnight or weekend travel.
  • Pursues relevant professional development opportunities to remain current on audit practices, compliance requirements, and institutional changes.
  • Consistently meets internal and external deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work the defined schedule and additional hours as needed.
  • Related duties as required.
