Position Summary

ECS is seeking a strategic and mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the organization’s financial operations and strategy. As a key member of the Executive Team, the CFO will partner with the CEO and Board of Trustees to ensure long-term financial sustainability, operational excellence, and mission alignment. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the financial future of a dynamic nonprofit committed to equity and systemic change.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

- Collaborate with the Executive Team and Board of Trustees to develop long-range financial goals, strategies, and policies.

- Provide financial insights and forecasting to support strategic planning and program innovation.

- Serve as a thought partner to the CEO on organizational growth, risk management, and resource allocation.

Financial Operations & Compliance

- Lead all financial functions including budgeting, accounting, cash flow, reporting, and audit readiness.

- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit regulations, and funder requirements.

- Oversee preparation of financial reports, tax filings, and government submissions.

Team Leadership & Organizational Development

- Supervise fiscal staff and oversee office management functions.

- Foster a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.

- Support department directors in understanding and managing their budgets.

Audit & Contract Management

- Coordinate and represent ECS in all audits (fiscal, programmatic, and funder-specific).

- Review contracts for financial accuracy and compliance.

- Maintain and update financial policies, procedures, and the Accounting Manual annually.

Cash Flow & Banking

- Optimize banking relationships and cash management strategies.

- Develop reliable cash flow projections and reporting mechanisms.

Insurance & Risk Management

- Ensure comprehensive liability and insurance coverage.

- Conduct regular market assessments and cost analyses to maintain optimal coverage.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred.

- Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including nonprofit sector experience.

- At least 5 years of supervisory experience.

- Proven success in strategic financial planning, compliance, and team development.

- Experience with government contracts, grants management, and multi-stream funding.

- Strong communication skills and ability to translate financial concepts for diverse audiences.
