Laboratory Research Technician III
The position is in Dr Kofler's laboratory in the Division of Neuropathology. One of the main focus areas in the Kofler lab is studying white matter pathology in aging and neurodegenerative disorders using several complementary approaches, including postmortem human brain tissue samples, postmortem 7T MRI scanning, computational pathology, machine learning, immunohistochemistry and cell culture. A second line of research is focused on building a registry of former contact sport participants to study clinical and neuropathological sequelae of concussive brain injuries.
Job Summary
Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.
Essential Functions
The position is in Dr Kofler's laboratory in the Division of Neuropathology. One of the main focus areas in the Kofler lab is studying white matter pathology in aging and neurodegenerative disorders using several complementary approaches, including postmortem human brain tissue samples, postmortem 7T MRI scanning, computational pathology, machine learning, immunohistochemistry and cell culture. A second line of research is focused on building a registry of former contact sport participants to study clinical and neuropathological sequelae of concussive brain injuries.
The incumbent is expected to have experience in basic laboratory skills (e.g. immunohistochemistry) and processing of MR images. The position will also require excellent communications skills for direct interactions with study participants.
Job duties (30%): Performing alignments of postmortem MR images with brain tissue slabs and digital whole slide images for anatomic mapping of tissue lesions
Job duties (30%): Participating in processing and maintaining human postmortem dura-derived fibroblast cultures and iPSC-derived and directly induced neuronal and glial cell lines
Job duties (40%): Communicating with participants of the National Sports Brain Bank registry and affiliated studies about study procedures and reminders. Data entry into a REDCap database
Physical Effort
This position is primarily sedentary. However, there will be times when incumbent will need to walk between collaborator laboratories.
