Overview

The Community Outreach Specialist, (Community Research Liaison), will develop relationships with Black/African American communities in Oregon and SW Washington to raise the value of brain health and dementia research. The COS will network with community groups, churches, professional organizations and local leaders to promote recruitment and engagement of Black/African Americans in the research studies of the Layton Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The COS will help connect other underrepresented groups to Layton Center studies and will provide support for rural outreach. The COS will work closely with the Layton Center’s Outreach Recruitment and Engagement (ORE) Core and be guided by its aims of making dementia prevention a shared value across the state. They will develop and implement recruitment and engagement strategies, assist with study management, collect data, and support the general outreach mission. Extensive experience with the Black/African American community is required.The COS must be a skilled communicator and comfortable with public speaking. They will be trained in how to talk with communities about Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias and the importance of diverse representation in research. The COS will at times work non-traditional hours.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; OR Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience; OR 4 years of relevant experience; OR Equivalent combination of training and experience

Community Research Liaison, Sr:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field AND 2 years of relevant experience; OR Equivalent combination of training and experience

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat DC; experience with teleconferencing
  • Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines; work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Will need to travel around Portland metro area for recruitment events
  • Organized and detail-oriented self-starter. Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to speak and communicate clearly, respectfully, and consistently with researchers, community members/leaders and executive level personnel is imperative
  • Ability to build rapport with community-based organizations and individuals in an often times ambiguous environment
