Core4ce

Microelectronics Device Research Engineer
875-383

Core4ce is seeking a highly motivated entry-level Scientist/Engineer to join the Agile Electronics Research Team within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). This position focuses on microelectronic device prototyping and fabrication using advanced materials for next-generation computing, communications, memory, and power electronics. As a Microelectronics Device Research Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and testing of advanced semiconductor devices using materials such as wide bandgap semiconductors (GaN, ?-Ga?O?) and ferroelectric nitrides (AlScN). You will collaborate with AFRL scientists and engineers, as well as external academic and industry partners, to mature emerging technologies into application-ready solutions. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to critical national research and development programs while advancing your career in microelectronics and device innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct R&D on the design, fabrication, and testing of microelectronic devices.

  • Prototype devices using materials such as GaN, ?-Ga?O?, AlScN, and supporting dielectrics, contacts, and substrates.

  • Utilize cleanroom processes (etching, deposition, lithography, metrology) for device fabrication.

  • Characterize device performance using tools such as SEM, TEM, and electrical testing systems.

  • Analyze complex data and interpret results to guide design improvements.

  • Use modeling and simulation tools to support device design and performance optimization.

  • Collaborate closely with AFRL teams and external partners from academia and industry.

  • Contribute to or lead the writing of peer-reviewed publications, conference papers, and research proposals.

  • Mentor junior researchers and support proposal development efforts.

  • Ensure compliance with research safety protocols and industry standards.

  • Assist with intellectual property development and documentation of findings.

    Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline with a focus on microelectronics.

  • Strong foundation in semiconductor device physics and microfabrication techniques.

  • Proficiency in simulation and modeling software for microelectronic devices.

  • Experience with cleanroom fabrication processes (etching, deposition, lithography).

  • Working knowledge of characterization tools such as SEM, TEM, profilometry, and electrical probing.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting results and collaborating with team members.

  • Ability to work both independently and in multidisciplinary research teams.

  • Familiarity with research safety standards, documentation practices, and intellectual property management.

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated expertise in device prototyping and electrical characterization, especially in computing or memory devices.

  • Broad hands-on experience in materials characterization, device design, and fabrication.

  • A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of microelectronics.

  • Experience presenting at technical conferences and contributing to scientific dialogue.

  • Prior involvement in writing or contributing to successful research proposals or grants.

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or graduate students.

  • Background in intellectual property development and patent processes.
