Weather Forecaster/Observer Location: Pax River NAS Company: RedTown Technical Services, LLC Position Type: Full-Time
Hourly Rate:

  • Forecaster: $40.30/hr
  • Observer: $34.09/hr
  • Health & Welfare Benefit: Additional $6.25/hr (up to 40 hours/week)
Note: Candidates will be paid the Observer rate during the certification process and when working Observer-only shifts. Night and Sunday differential pay is compounded to base pay.

Job Summary

RedTown Technical Services, LLC is seeking a qualified Weather Forecaster/Observer to support aviation operations through accurate and timely meteorological observation, forecasting, and reporting. The selected candidate will play a vital role in flight safety by monitoring weather conditions, issuing advisories, and providing weather briefings in accordance with government and aviation standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform meteorological weather watch, including observation, evaluation, and dissemination of METAR/SPECI reports
  • Monitor radar, satellite imagery, and other meteorological data sources
  • Issue Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), weather warnings, watches, and advisories
  • Operate Pilot to Metro Service (PMSV) and respond to pilot weather inquiries
  • Provide DD-175-1 flight weather briefings and over-the-counter briefings
  • Record, encode, and disseminate surface weather observations
  • Receive and distribute pilot reports (PIREPs)

Minimum Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Eligible for a Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC)
  • Minimum 2 years of aviation forecasting experience with a DoD or other government agency, including flight weather briefings and familiarity with unmanned systems
  • Prior observation certification with DoD, FAA, or NWS and at least 2 years of surface weather observation experience (METAR code)
  • Prior forecaster certification with DoD or NWS and 2 years of aviation forecasting experience
  • Completion of a DoD formal training program (or NWS equivalent) in both weather observing and forecasting – must provide documentation
  • Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contacts
  • Proficient in the use of meteorological and communications equipment
  • Strong command of the English language, both spoken and written

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Navy's Flight Weather Briefer program
  • Active DoD CAC or held a security clearance within the past 2 years
  • Familiarity with Automated Service Operating System (ASOS)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • May work alone in a controlled office environment with access to kitchen and vending amenities
  • Variable workload with potential high stress during inclement weather
  • Regular exposure to outdoor elements and possible stair climbing
  • Must be available for night, weekend, and holiday shifts
