QA Inspector

Overview:

The Quality Assurance (QA) Inspector ensures that products meet specified quality standards and regulatory requirements. This role involves inspecting and reporting on In-process and returned materials, supporting part qualification through accurate inspections, and maintaining quality records. The QA Inspector will work closely with all Manufacturing and Quality team areas and use various tools and systems, including SAP, to monitor and uphold quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Adhere to Safety Protocols

  • Follow all GIW safety requirements to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Perform Standard Work Tasks

  • Use established standard work procedures for daily tasks to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Follow documented processes and work instructions to carry out inspection duties effectively.

Inspect and Report on In-process and Returned Material

  • Examine In-process and Returned materials to identify defects or issues.
  • Prepare and submit detailed inspection reports to support the Manufacturing and Quality team in resolving quality concerns.

Support Part Qualification

  • Conduct accurate and timely inspections to support the qualification of parts.
  • Report findings and provide documentation to verify that parts meet required specifications.

Read and Interpret Drawings

  • Read engineering drawings and schematics to understand product specifications and quality requirements.
  • Write comprehensive inspection reports based on the findings from drawings and physical inspections.

Interpret GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)

  • Utilize knowledge of GD&T to interpret engineering drawings and ensure compliance with design specifications.

Create SAP Notifications

  • Generate notifications in SAP for nonconforming castings and other quality issues.
  • Track and manage nonconformance reports to ensure timely resolution and corrective actions.

Witness Hydrostatic Pump Tests

  • Observe and document hydrostatic pump tests when required.
  • Verify that tests are conducted according to standards and report results as needed.

Calibrate Inspection Equipment

  • Perform calibrations on inspection equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability when needed.
  • Maintain records of calibration activities and address any calibration-related issues.

Monitor and Update Quality Resources in SAP

  • Oversee and update quality-related resources and records in SAP.
  • Ensure that data is current and accurately reflects the status of quality processes and metrics.

NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Skills

  • Certification and Proficiency
    • Have or demonstrate a willingness and ability to achieve Level 2 (L2) certification in Non-Destructive Examination (NDE), including Visual Testing (VT), Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
    • Conduct NDE procedures per industry standards and company requirements.
  • Technical Proficiency
    • Apply knowledge of NDE techniques to assess material and product integrity.
    • Perform Visual Testing (VT) to identify surface defects, discontinuities, and other anomalies.
    • Use Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI) to detect surface-breaking defects.
    • Utilize Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to evaluate internal structures and detect subsurface flaws.
  • Math Skills
    • Utilize advanced math skills to interpret and analyze NDE data and measurements.

CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) Operation

  • Experience and Training
    • Experience with or demonstrated a willingness and ability to train on and operate CMM equipment and software proficiently.
    • Gain expertise in using CMM to measure and verify geometric characteristics of components.
  • Technical Skills
    • Utilize math skills suitable for achieving proficiency in operating Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) equipment.
    • Interpret CMM data and results to ensure components meet design specifications.

Computer Skills

  • Digital Record Management
    • Manage and manipulate digital records efficiently, including inspection data and quality reports.
    • Ensure the accuracy and security of electronic documentation.
  • System Proficiency
    • Demonstrate general proficiency in handling computer-based documentation and reporting systems, including SAP and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).

Other Duties as Assigned

Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the QA Manager or Supervisor.

Adapt to changing priorities and support various quality-related initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree in a relevant field is preferred.

Proven experience in quality inspection or a related role, familiarity with inspection tools and equipment.

Skills and Competencies

Familiarity with safety protocols and quality assurance processes.

Strong understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.

Proficiency in using SAP for quality management and data entry.

Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Experience with hydrostatic pump testing.

Experience with the calibration of inspection equipment is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) for documentation and reporting.

Advanced mathematical skills for interpreting and analyzing CMM inspections and NDE data.

Working Conditions

The position may require occasional overtime and flexibility in working hours.

Must be able to work in a manufacturing or industrial environment where exposure to machinery and noise is common.

Physical requirements include bending, stopping, stretching, squatting, standing, walking, and lifting up to 70 pounds.
