Materials Research Scientist
877-383

Azimuth is seeking a qualified research scientist with experience in the areas of inorganic chemistry, materials science, and photonics to join a new research effort relating to the mechanochemical synthesis, characterization, and process development of polycrystalline halide perovskite materials. This position located onsite within the Organic and Hybrid Non-Linear Optical Materials group at the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH.

Responsibilities:

  • Production and characterization of bulk, polycrystalline halide perovskite via mechanochemical synthesis.
  • Development of processes to produce optically transparent polycrystalline halide perovskite ceramic wafers.
  • Investigation of fundamental structure-function relationships between wafer microstructure and optical properties, for the consistent production high quality wafers.
  • Development of processes to produce high-quality single crystals via the Bridgman growth method.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers, developing and characterizing chromophores, nanomaterials, polymers, and crystalline materials for optical applications relevant to the United States Air Force.
  • Solve important, long-term challenges that guide research efforts in an environment that strongly encourages collaboration (government/academic/industry), publication in top journals, and conference attendance, as well as opportunities to collaborate with internal and external teammates, customers, and partners to create objectives and work plans, review designs, support experimentation, and/or transition technical designs.
  • The duties of this position will also include the participation, possibly in both writing and review, in the bid and proposal process for Azimuth's continued work in government contracting. This participation will be on an as-needed and as-requested basis by personnel in the Business Development department, within corporate, and/or within the supervisory chain of this position. This position's inclusion in the bid and proposal process is vital to the understanding of duties, responsibilities, tools and function of the position and to proper conveyance for Azimuth's past performance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in the synthesis and purification of high-purity halide perovskite powders.
  • Proficiency in solid-state crystal growth techniques (Bridgman, solvothermal, etc).
  • Familiarity with mechanochemical approaches to powder synthesis and using mechanochemical approaches to control powder grain dimensions.
  • Proficiency in ceramic sintering techniques.
  • Proficiency using uniaxial pressing equipment; desired experience with Carver manual and automatic presses with tunable temperature and pressure settings.
  • Proficiency using evaluable and split type die sets for wafer production.
  • Proficiency in solid-state crystal growth via the Bridgman method.
  • Experience in the structural characterization of materials including x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
  • Experience in the optical characterization of materials including spectrophotometry and steady-state and time-resolved luminescence.
  • Proficiency in advanced data analysis and visualization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by public presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Ability to research, devise, and learn new techniques and technical topics. Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
