This position will serve as a Postdoctoral Associate with the Center for Vaccine Research (CVR). The incumbent will work on mice, ferret, and nonhuman primate models of severe disease caused by inhalation of pathogenic viruses (influenza and encephalitic alphaviruses) in small particle aerosols. Work will include experiments performed in Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 and 3 environments with routine work in the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL).
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: assisting the principal investigator, project coordinator, and lab manager in the design, preparation, and conduct of animal studies, including oversight of lab personnel; purchase of supplies; observations and procedures with animals; aerosol exposures of animals to pathogenic agents; collection of samples from animals; conducting laboratory assays to analyze immunological, pathological, and virological changes in those samples; documentation of these studies in laboratory notebooks; and assisting the PI in the preparation of manuscripts for publication and reports to study sponsors. The incumbent will be expected to be able to independently initiate and troubleshoot research protocols; supervise and train other laboratory personnel in specialized techniques; operate and maintain laboratory equipment; maintain clearances and training to ensure BSL-3 facility access; with others in the lab, perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the laboratories; and attend weekly lab meetings and present findings.
Candidates must have earned a PhD/MD in Biology or related Field. It is not required that applicants have prior experience either in working with large animal models (ferrets, rabbits, and nonhuman primates) or conducting aerosol exposures; training will be provided. This position requires successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulations as well as a Suitability Assessment for work with Tier I pathogens. This position is eligible for an RBL Premium Payment.
Salary based on current NIH 2025 Stipend Levels.
