Position Summary & Responsibilities

 An HVACR Technician 3, under general direction and/or using detailed procedures/work instructions, safely installs, modifies, services, and repairs a variety of environmental control systems including air conditioning, ventilation; computer rooms; process coolers; ice machines; exhaust systems, evaporative cooling and related control systems. Work involves preventive and corrective maintenance including the following:


  • Installing, repairing, and service, any of a variety of HVACR equipment such as air handlers, air conditioners, and heat pumps; hot water boilers, hydronic systems, components, and peripherals; stem systems, components, and peripherals; pumps, motors, expansion tanks, compression tanks, and bag tanks; compressors for refrigerant and air; exhaust systems, and refrigerated equipment for food, drug, and scientific sample storage.
  • Operation and inspection of HVACR equipment to diagnose defects and source of trouble.
  • Dismantling, reassembling, and repairing HVACR equipment.
  • Replacing broken or defective parts and coordinating procurement of replacement parts.
  • Fabricating, assembling and installing ductwork and chassis parts.
  • Using portable metalworking tools, hand tools, and brazing equipment, assists installation of evaporator unit in chassis or in air-duct system.
  • Cutting and bending tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools, cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment, joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints. Using torch to form complete circuit for refrigerant, installs expansion valves and other system components in circuit.
  • Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, exhaust, and ventilation fans, to control panels.
  • Installs air and water filters in completed installation.
  • Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to ensure proper operation reporting any changes to HVACR Team.
  • Testing joints and connections for gas and/or refrigerant leaks, using gauges, leak detecting equipment, and/or soap-and-water solution.
  • Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands.
  • Replacing defective controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units.
  • Operating overhauled/repaired equipment to ensure proper operation, reports any issues noted. Writes up and submits work requests for corrective action.
  • Working with technical manuals and repair specifications and procedures.
  • Pipefitting and structural layout, mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor.
  • May train lower or lateral level technicians for which they are qualified.
  • implementing Lock-out Tag-out (LOTO) plans to ensure work is performed safely.

 

Several administrative duties to be carried out at the HVACR Technician 3, including but not limited to:

 

  • Materials Coordinator: checking purchase requests submitted by the members of the HVACR team and submitting them to the Planner for processing. Receiving materials from the shipping and receiving department to verify materials received are correct for the task/repairs to be performed, storage of all materials received and maintaining electronic files (paper trail) of all purchase requests submitted and received for the HVACR team.
  • Submitting purchase requests and keeping inventory of filters, belts, and other supplies required to carry out the preventative maintenance tasks site wide.
  • Sorting and tentative scheduling of the HVACR preventative maintenance work orders, working with the Scheduler to ensure the work is scheduled and completed on time.

 

HVACR Technician 3, under general supervision, may perform minor tasks as needed, including, but not limited to:

  • Other duties as assigned to ensure timely project execution.
  • Maintaining facilities in clean, safe and orderly condition.
  • Organizing interior and exterior of shop and other maintenance facilities.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • A High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Vocational Technical Certificate in HVACR is preferred. 
  • Applicable Federal EPA Section 608 Technician Certification is required.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain WV HVACR Technician license within three (3) months. 
  • Must possess or be able to obtain WV State HVACR Specialty Electrician License within three (3) months. 
  • At least 3 years of job related HVACR experience in an industrial environment is required. 
  • An Associate degree in a related field may substitute for two years of job­ related experience.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail are required.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and software programs for administrative duties such as email is required.
  • Hold and maintain current HVACR electrician card and refrigerant handling license in accordance with State or union rules.
  • Ability to pass a Fit for Duty employment test to verify the ability to meet the physical and functional demands of the position.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen. 
  • Ability to pass a background investigation, including but not limited to nationwide criminal record search, and other relevant background information deemed necessary by the contract. 
  • United States citizenship is required to work on a federal contract and will be electronically verified via E-Verify. 

Preferred Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED/TASC/ HiSET with at least ten (10) years of job- related experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least eight (8) years of job-related experience and specific training and thorough knowledge in the particular area of HVACR maintenance and installation, plus a broad knowledge of other disciplines such as energy management control systems, general math, geometry, trigonometry, chemistry, biology, etc.
  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal laws and company policies and procedures.


Physical and Mental Requirements: 

  • Lifting of up to 50 pounds is required. 
  • Entry into confined spaces is required
  • Kneeling, standing, and walking, and use of speech/hearing abilities for communications, constant mental alertness, and must be able to work according to schedule.


Work Environment:

Majority of the workday is in a variety of environments including outdoors, lab/research areas, and inside administrative areas. Assists in performing maintenance, housekeeping or administrative duties in a typical shop environment where certain hazards do exist.

 

Hours of Work:

This is typically an 8 hour per day daylight schedule.  Response to urgent call-outs at nights and on weekends is required as well as scheduled weekend/holiday outages to perform preventive and corrective maintenance, however these instances are very limited.
