Overview

The Shift Production Manager will be responsible for planning, directing, and managing production and operational work activities, as well as the resources necessary for the shift’s production. Essential functions of this position include supervising the production staff, scheduling and directing resources to meet production schedules, and overseeing the daily efficiency of process lines. The Shift Manager will ensure adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) that are in effect, assuring the safety, quality, and quantity of product produced.



Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, direction, and motivation to Production and Operations to encourage ownership of results at all levels.
  • Overall responsibility for the efficient startup, operation, and rundown of assigned production lines based on the production schedule.
  • Analyze the daily cost variance report to investigate performance efficiencies, labor variances, product scrap, and raw materials used.
  • Advance the department culture with an integrated approach to production and quality, based on teamwork and cooperation.
  • Collaborate with other management, engineering, and quality assurance personnel to resolve production problems and recommend measures to improve the operations and utilization of machines and equipment.
  • Review production processing schedules to make decisions concerning inventory requirements, staffing requirements, work procedures, and work assignments, considering budgetary limitations and time constraints.
  • Plan, develop, and implement new methods and procedures designed to improve operations and quality, minimize operating costs, and effect greater utilization of labor and materials.
  • Recommend and/or manage continuous improvement in a way that engages employees and functional partners in a systematic, effective, and collaborative manner.
  • Work with other Shift Production Managers to evaluate production jobs and create comprehensive training guides that outline position training requirements and training timelines.

  • Establish priorities and allocate resources to measure and track improvements in shift performance.

  • Provide direction and leadership in the resolution of technical, production-related, and quality problems to assure completion.

  • Ensure deviations are investigated thoroughly, driving root cause analysis for corrective action.

  • Lead the department through both tactical and strategic initiatives in accordance with established company procedures, safety and quality standards, and government or regulatory guidelines

  • Drive 5S implementation/practices while generating and implementing process and/or productivity improvements.

  • Ensure strict observance of all safety rules and regulations.

  • Perform all other work as required by the Company.



Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or equivalent technical school degree preferred, or equivalent experience and education.
  • Progressive experience in production or a related field in a USDA food manufacturing facility is required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • TPM or Lean Six Sigma preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge in the equipment used in food production are required.
  • Experience supporting, measuring, and improving processes to meet organizational goals while coordinating with other departments and managers.
  • Knowledgeable in creating precise employee documentation and files.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with and train employees in a clear and concise manner through both written and verbal instruction.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents as well as the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Strong mathematical skills and the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to problems involving several variables in standardized and unstandardized situations.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Outlook and Office, specifically Microsoft Excel.

  • Regularly required to reach, bend, kneel, stooping, crouching/squatting, crawling, climbing stairs/ladders.

  • Varied temperatures from hot and humid to very cold.
