ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re thrilled to offer an exciting opportunity to join Oxford University Press as Acquisition Editor for Public Health within the Academic Division’s Research Books Editorial team. This impactful role reports to the Executive Editor, Social Sciences, working within the Social and Behavioral Sciences editorial group, while representing OUP’s award-winning list in the US and abroad.

This is a particularly dynamic moment to come into this role, as our field-leading, interdisciplinary Public Health program is poised for growth, with room to explore new areas and innovative publishing formats.

As Acquisition Editor, you’ll collaborate closely with talented colleagues across Research Editorial and the wider Press—including Product, Rights & Translations, Production, Sales, Marketing, and Publicity. You’ll also engage regularly with a vibrant network of external partners: authors and editors, editorial boards, reviewers, OUP Delegates and University stakeholders, policy makers, think tanks, research funders, professional bodies, scholarly societies, and the broader academic community.

With a strong focus on proactive content acquisition aligned with market needs and our evolving publishing portfolio, this role plays a key part in advancing OUP’s mission and enhancing our scholarly and public impact. You’ll also have the opportunity to help shape the future of academic publishing as we respond to changing research, reading, and writing practices across disciplines.

ABOUT YOU

  • Enthusiasm for growing and diversifying OUP’s established Public Health list by acquiring approximately 20-25 titles per year for research, professional, and trade audiences
  • Experience in academic, professional, and trade publishing acquisitions, including with authors, society partners, and literary agents, or equivalent experience in research and communications professions
  • Entrepreneurial mindset for individual book commissioning, list development, and larger product ideas
  • Proven track record of managing the commissioning process and delivery of high-quality manuscripts
  • Knowledge of or interest in the discipline of Public Health and/or equivalent knowledge of related disciplines, particularly Sociology, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and/or Social Work
  • Experience negotiating contracts, building budgets, and managing P&L statements
  • Interest in analyzing sales and usage data and discussing the same with authors, agents, and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new systems and processes
  • Ability to work with peers and cross-functionally in a productive manner (including within the matrix management structure of the Press) towards a common purpose
  • Excellent written communication as well as strong presentation, interpersonal, and verbal skills
  • Experience building, maintaining, and utilizing networks within the publishing industry and relevant academic/policy/professional communities

BENEFITS

We care about work/life balance at OUP. We offer 15 days’ vacation time that rises with service, 8 sick days, plus floating holidays, personal days, company holidays, and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect of working hours and the use of technology to support regular remote working, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We care for you and your dependents by offering health, dental, and vision insurance plans to our full-time employees. Each plan has multiple levels of coverage to fit your needs and has a high level of contribution made by OUP. In addition, we offer Employee Assistant Programs for all full-time employees, regardless of whether you elect in health insurance. We also offer life insurance and disability insurance.

We help make your money go further by providing a non-elective contribution on your behalf to your retirement plan of 7% of your salary and a matching contribution to the retirement plan of 50% on the first 6% of employee contributions on based earnings.

Position Location: This role can be hybrid, based out of New York, NY or remote in the United States.

GJC Level: I6 (for internal purposes only)

Salary: $67,844 - $96,000 dependent on skills and experience
