SUMMARY: The Router is responsible for planning, optimizing, and maintaining daily delivery routes to meet customer requirements while ensuring operational efficiency and compliance with regulatory guidelines. This role plays a key part in driving service excellence and cost control through route analysis, system maintenance, and collaboration with operations teams


Location: Smyrna - Vinings, GA (Near Battery Center)

Hours: Mon-Fri 8:00am - 5:00pm


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Route Planning & Optimization

• Develop and maintain efficient routing plans based on customer needs, delivery windows, and SPR facility constraints.

• Continuously review and adjust routes to improve service levels, reduce costs, and increase driver productivity.

• Modify routes as needed to address short-term or unexpected changes in demand or resource availability.

• Track and report on key routing metrics such as cost per stop, stops per hour, on-time performance, and miles per route. Use insights to inform routing adjustments and performance discussions

 

 

System Management & Maintenance

  • Perform daily maintenance and updates in the Omnitracs/Roadnet system, including geocoding, stop sequences, and standard route data.
  • Ensure all customer delivery parameters (open/close times, restrictions, service days) are accurate and up to date.
  • Create and test monthly "what-if" routing scenarios to identify potential delivery expense savings or service enhancements.
  • Provide input on routing software enhancements and support training initiatives for new users or process updates.

 

Collaboration & Communication

• Work closely with Warehouse, Sales, Dispatch, and Operations Managers to align routing strategies with available resources and business needs.

• Serve as backup to Dispatcher(s) when needed to ensure continuity of operations.

• Partner with customer service and dispatch to resolve delivery-related issues and adjust future routing strategies accordingly.

 

Compliance & Post-Route Analysis

• Ensure all routing solutions comply with DOT regulations related to driver hours and vehicle weight.

• Conduct post-route analysis to evaluate time, cost, adherence to sequence, travel distance, and driver/equipment efficiency.

• Identify and recommend improvements based on historical performance and trends.

• Support seasonal routing adjustments and contingency planning to maintain service levels during high-volume periods.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • None

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in data management tools and software (e.g., Excel, ERP, MDM systems).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• 2–3 years of experience in a fast-paced logistics or transportation environment

• Hands-on experience with routing software such as Omnitracs/Roadnet or similar platforms

• Strong understanding of route optimization principles and regulatory requirements (e.g., DOT)

• Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

 

Preferred:

• Bachelor's Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field

• Demonstrated success in reducing delivery costs or improving route performance

• Experience supporting multiple distribution centers 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret reports.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or concerns from employees or stakeholders.  Ability to effectively communicate and present information to management, distribution center staff, and drivers. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply mathematical operations necessary to the design and analysis of truck routing, including hours of service, mileage, and associated costs.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:

Ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities and business needs.  Demonstrated sense of urgency and ability to maintain momentum in high-priority or time-sensitive projects.  Experience collaborating within complex organizational structures across corporate and DC functions. 

 

REASONING ABILITY: 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make sound business process decisions

 

 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Hands-on experience with routing software such as Omnitracs/Roadnet or similar platforms
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
