Bachelor’s degree in athletic training education or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and eight years of experience as a certified athletic trainer. Certification with the National Athletic Trainers Association is required. Current licensure or eligibility to obtain licensure with the Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers is required. Current knowledge and understanding of NCAA governing rules is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree is preferred and will substitute for one year of the required experience.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s Athletics department is seeking to hire a Senior Athletic Trainer. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
- Participates in the development, coordination and administration of a comprehensive sports medicine programs involving intercollegiate sports.
- Prepares athletes for daily practices/competitions through management and prevention of athletic injuries, development and implementation of individualized therapeutic athletic rehabilitation programs, and provides medical coverage and other duties assigned by the Athletic Director, Deputy Athletic Director and Senior Associate Athletic Director.
- Supervises lower level staff, graduate interns and student assistants to include assigning duties and approving time off.
- Assists and enhances the development of sports medicine programs for the University to include: injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs and counseling for student-athletes.
- Administers a variety of advanced athletic training room rehabilitation.
- Provides coaches with information on weather policy and injury management updates as needed.
- Provides medical coverage and medical supervision for all organized and specified individual or team voluntary try-outs as approved by the Athletic Director.
- Maintains daily records and documentation of injuries and treatments of athletes.
- Works in conjunction with the strength and conditioning staff to ensure safety in the implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet the individual student-athlete needs.
- Supervises and operates delegated athletic training room facilities to ensure OSHA regulations and University standards.
- Responsible for medical supplies inventory and purchasing to include purchase bidding of medical supplies annually.
- Provides athletic training services for the University’s athletics department, including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary.
- Assists with the coordination and scheduling of pre-participation physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete.
- Responsible for training and supervising lower level staff, graduate interns and student assistants.
- Evaluates and recommends new techniques and equipment that would enhance the benefit of the sports medical program.
- Provides the Senior Associate Athletic Director with injury report updates.
- Provides class illness, sickness and appointment documentation as needed.
- Assists with championship events and medical coverage.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
- Related duties as required.
