Position Summary
The Payroll Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end execution weekly payroll processing operations for a national multi-billion-dollar construction firm. This will include both exempt and non-exempt employees, union and non-union labor, and multi-state and multi-company complexities. This role ensures timely, accurate and compliant payroll execution, while partnering across departments, as well as leading the training and development of the payroll team members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage the daily operations of members of the payroll team.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development to payroll staff, including training, performance evaluations, and workflow coordination
  • Serve as the Payroll Subject Matter Expert, delivering exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders and staying current on payroll laws, tax regulations and industry best practices
  • Manage the compliant execution of the annual compensation cycle including bonus payouts, stock options and annual increases
  • Oversee year-end payroll processes including W-2 distribution and inquiries, as well as final wage balancing for IRS filings
  • Partner with Payroll Compliance & Data Manager to coordinate tasks such as filing union reports and union audits and monitoring our third-party tax provider for payroll taxes and garnishments
  • Support account analysis and reconciliations related to payroll processing
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance payroll systems, internal controls, and process efficiencies
  • Perform other payroll-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in a multi-cycle payroll environment, including supervisory or team leadership responsibilities
  • Experience managing payroll across multiple states and entities required
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) Certification a plus
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong focus on delivering responsive, solutions-oriented customer service to both internal and external stakeholders
    • Strong preference for weekly processing experience
    • Union contracting and payroll processing experience preferred
    • Proficiency in all aspects of payroll processing within a fast-paced environment, including understanding of job cost accounting, labor burden calculations, and project cost coding
    • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and adapt to shifting priorities
