The Director, Tax is responsible for overseeing all aspects of domestic and international tax, including income tax, indirect taxes (sales & use, HST/GST/VAT), tax compliance, tax provision (ASC 740), property tax and foreign withholding taxes.  This position is an individual contributor role within the finance organization and will work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and external advisors to ensure global tax compliance, optimize tax strategies and support business growth in a dynamic, innovative environment. The ideal candidate is interested and willing to be in the details and take a hands-on approach to bringing tax function activities in-house. They should be excited by opportunities to build and own tax processes, while maintaining a continuous improvement mindset.

Key Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Manage preparation and review of U.S. federal, state, and local income tax returns
  • Oversee Canadian and UK tax compliance, including corporate income tax, HST/GST, and VAT filings
  • Ensure compliance with sales and use tax across relevant U.S. jurisdictions
  • Lead global tax calendar and ensure timely filings and payments across all tax types
  • Coordinate with external advisors to support international compliance and filing requirements

Tax Provision (ASC 740)

  • Own and prepare quarterly and annual income tax provisions in accordance with ASC 740
  • Coordinate with the external auditors on the year-end audit process
  • Analyze and explain effective tax rate (ETR) drivers and reconcile tax accounts

Indirect Taxes

  • Assess, develop and maintain sales and use tax compliance program and reporting and nexus analysis in the U.S
  • Manage HST/GST (Canada) and VAT (UK) reporting, compliance, and recovery processes

International Tax and Withholding

  • Monitor and manage foreign withholding tax obligations on cross-border transactions
  • Assist with tax treaty analysis, tax residency certifications, and compliance with U.S. and foreign withholding tax requirements
  • Support transfer pricing documentation and intercompany policies in partnership with external consultants

Tax Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize global tax position and support business objectives
  • Advise on tax implications of business operations, M&A activity, and international expansion and/or partnerships
  • Monitor and interpret tax law changes, assessing their impact on the company and advising management accordingly

Property Tax

  • Oversee property tax compliance and filings for U.S. operations.
  • Work with internal teams and assessors to manage valuations and appeals as needed.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Manage external tax consultants and advisors
  • Provide tax support to internal departments such as Accounting, Legal, HR, Commercial and Operations
  • Develop and maintain internal policies and controls to ensure tax compliance and minimize risk
  • Other ad hoc finance and accounting-related projects, as needed

Education & Licenses and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA and/or MST preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive tax experience, including working in Big 4 accounting firm and with corporate tax departments
  • Experience with publicly traded companies in the biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences sector

Competencies & Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. federal and state income tax laws, ASC 740, and indirect taxes
  • Experience with international tax compliance and foreign operations
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with a hands-on approach
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with a collaborative mindset; ability to translate complex tax matters into clear and concise impact statements for diverse stakeholders
  • Familiarity with cross-border licensing, R&D tax credits, and IP planning strategies
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and evolving business environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel
