Department Overview

Sarah Andres' Lab is located within the Department of Pediatrics. The Andres Lab investigates intestinal epithelial differentiation, nutrient handling, and barrier function with a focus on the neonatal inflammatory disease necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and the use of human milk extracellular vesicles as a potential therapeutic. By using rare human patient samples, genetic mouse models, and cutting-edge patient-derived organoids, the Andres Lab is at the forefront of research in these fields evidenced by high impact publications and multiple funding sources.

We are currently recruiting for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate depending on qualifications.

Function/Duties of Position

The Research Associate and/or Senior Research Associate is responsible for executing, and overseeing complex organoid experiments and developing functional assays to delineate mechanisms of human milk action on intestinal development and maturation. This involves generating neonatal patient-derived intestinal organoids (enteroids) from surgical tissue samples. Cultivating enteroids requires keen attention to detail and impecable sterile technique. The Senior Research Associate is also responsible for isolating human milk extracellular vesicles via density-gradient ultracentrifugation, quantifying by Nanoparticle Tracking analysis, and running various downstream analyses or experiments including, qPCR, western blotting, immunostaining, imaging and cell uptake studies, microRNA sequencing, proteomics, and oral gavage into rodant models. Experiments are currently focused on nutrient uptake, lipid handing, and metabolism. The ability to manage multiple co-occuring experiments involving enteroids and/or mice is important. In addition to primary project responsibilitoes, this position will assist lab team members with experiments involving neonatal mouse pups, oral gavage, and use of a hypoxic chamber. This also includes intestinal tissue harvest and procesing, enteroid generation and propogation, immune cell isolation and culture, immunostaining and microscopy, and molecular biology.

In addition to research skills training, our team prioritizes mentorship and training in career development.
