Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Scientific Affairs provides leadership to the Scientific Affairs team and is responsible for the overall objectives of the team. This includes supporting the overall opportunity and revenue goals of the Pharma Services business unit; providing technical and scientific leadership across relevant modalities; possessing strong operational knowledge to guide project specifications and timeline projections with external and internal partners; initiating and progressing internal and external research and development collaborations to support publications and engagements to enhance brand positioning and awareness; and representing Pharma Services scientifically within the company and externally. This is a key leadership role in the support of clinical trials and research projects for pharmaceutical, biotech and academic clients. The Senior Director, Scientific Affairs advocates for Scientific Affairs internally and externally by promoting and maintaining liaisons with project management, technical operations, marketing and quality/regulatory organizations. The role oversees and ensures adequate and relevant scientific support for the major scientific responsibilities including generating technical proposal language and elements, accurate interpretation and analyses of complex data and grows the Scientific Affairs group commensurate with NeoGenomics Pharma Services growth.
As a member of the Pharma Leadership team, the incumbent provides input to strategic direction, supports initiatives and growth objectives of the business. The Senior Director of Scientific Affairs oversees the core scientific aspects of project requirements, statements of work, research and development initiatives and applied development/validations as a prelude to clinical trial testing. This role may include the disciplines of biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, engineering, software development, and other technical disciplines.
This is the senior leadership role in the principal scientist job category. This role oversees full range of scientific/technical implementation including functional/business teams for both client projects and new company initiatives and portfolio management. The Principal Scientist supports a full range of procedures for assay and technology development including Molecular, IHC, Image Analysis Flow Cytometry, MultiOmyx/Multiplex, FISH, and Cytogenetics. The Senior Director leads and advises on publication and presentation output and strategy to support the NeoGenomics scientific leadership and brand within pharma services.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Represents NeoGenomics Scientific Affairs at high profile or strategic forums, including but not limited to audits, sponsor meetings, conferences, board meetings, and legal proceedings
  • Supports the strategic building and area of responsibility of the scientific affairs team within Pharma Services, to ensure Neogenomics is recognized as a scientific leader in the diagnostics and translational medicine space
  • Consistently and independently interacts and supports commercial teams in developing and presenting project proposals and statements of work for development, validation and clinical study projects
  • Independently designs and executes applications within the modality areas
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all Core Responsibilities of a Senior Scientist
  • Consistently and independently performs the more complex level of procedures and projects
  • Provides technical leadership, mentors and directs laboratory teams in performing project experiments
  • Represents the department in a diverse range of settings, including with other departments, clients, audits, vendors, and conferences
  • Provides leadership on project design and feasibility studies
  • Performs literature review and writes project/product proposals
  • Reviews new technologies in the market
  • Analyzes and presents data and project updates to the management team and clients
  • Provides support to research collaborations, clinical trials and other department projects
  • Prepares high quality technical material including posters/papers, client presentations and technical content for marketing materials
  • Assists with departmental budgeting and/or administrative efforts
  • Familiar with CAP/CUA and FDA (GCP or GLP as appropriate) requirements and knowledgeable with the specialty requirements within those organizations
Senior Director Management Responsibilities
  • Assists in managing and leading scientific personnel team
  • Carries out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and overseeing work; monitoring and improving performance of direct/indirect reports; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving issues
  • Facilitates growth of staff through deliberate project assignments consistent with business needs, mentoring, and training
Additional Responsibilities (may be assigned):
  • Publishes and presents based upon research and development activities
  • Attends and presents at academic meetings
  • Attends additional training or educational opportunities as needed
  • Trains staff in proper procedures
  • Works with Business Development and Marketing on creating customer facing materials and associated scientific content
  • Creates cost and capacity models for newly developed/adopted techniques
  • Determines ROI needed to justify adoption of new assays/services in collaboration with marketing/product management and operations
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Sales and Project Management Operations, as needed
Experience, Education and Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in a life, physical or computer science or M.D. preferred; M.S. in a life, physical or computer science with related experience; BS in a life, physical or computer sciences required
  • Twelve or more years related laboratory or technical experience
  • Experience in a scientific affairs role
  • Prior client-facing experience
  • Managerial and leadership experience
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory techniques
  • Published evidence from previous research
