Overview

Under the direction of NSTX-U Recovery Supervisors or Lead Technicians, completes assigned Mechanical Technician tasks as outlined in the Core Duties below.

Responsibilities

Core Duties:

  • Assembles, fabricates, installs, inspects, maintains or repairs NSTX-U mechanical structures, systems and components in accordance with procedures, drawings, vendor manuals or other instructional media provided by the project team.
  • Successfully complete required orientation and training.
  • Participate in procedure walk-throughs and pre-job briefings.
  • Work area set-up and job staging.
  • Work area housekeeping during task execution.
  • Manual material handling within established PPPL guidelines.
  • Work area cleanup and demobilization at task completion.
  • Participate in post-job briefings.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma (minimum), accredited trade school graduate (preferred).
  • 5 years + (with trade school) experience in fabrication/machine shop, energy industry or DOE research laboratory OR 10 years + (without trade school) experience in fabrication/machine shop, energy industry or Department of Energy research laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Mechanical Technician must possess:

  • General knowledge/experience with shop or construction safety/safe work practices.
  • Ability to read and understand procedures, drawings and sketches.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Experience with the use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to closely follow work instructions and rules.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • No medical restriction working near static magnetic fields.
  • Capable of climbing ladders and working at heights from scaffolding, platforms and powered aerial lifts.

Working Conditions:

  • Shift work possible.
