Community Relations Coordinator



The Division of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement (PAE) at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships with donors, alumni, and stakeholders, supporting the University's mission in education, research, and healthcare. In this role, you will serve as the integral part within PAE's Office of the MHSF, reporting to the Executive Director of Development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Serve as primary liaison for third-party entities and volunteer leadership groups (e.g., UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Council) involved in cancer-related fundraising initiatives
  • Develop, implement, and refine policies, procedures, and guidelines for third-party partnerships and volunteer engagement, ensuring alignment with UPMC Hillman brand standards
  • Review and approve use of UPMC Hillman logos, messaging, and branding in consultation with UPMC Marketing
  • Manage logistics and operations for development-related events and meetings, including internal fundraising and stewardship events (e.g., Thomas E. Richards Distinguished Lecture Series, Circle of Hope)
  • Cultivate and expand relationships with community-based organizations and volunteer leaders to support fundraising for cancer research and clinical care
  • Collaborate with UPMC Hillman clinical marketing and community outreach teams to align community engagement strategies with philanthropic priorities
  • Provide strategic and tactical support to the Executive Director of Development and other key staff during high-volume periods
  • Partner with University of Pittsburgh colleagues across the Division of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement to ensure cohesive community relations efforts
  • Write and produce communications and materials tailored to higher education, healthcare, and nonprofit audiences
  • Lead and manage multiple projects independently with strong attention to detail and sound judgment
  • Uphold and promote the mission and vision of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center through all engagement activities

Job Summary

Manages and leverages mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners for the University. Oversees large, complex projects from initial contract to execution and evaluation while improving process delivery and measurables.


Essential Functions
  • Support volunteer and community engagement through development of policies, procedures, toolkits, and guidelines to enhance partnership strategies.
  • Create and manage print, web, and digital materials to advance fundraising and volunteer engagement initiatives.
  • Develop and implement targeted community relations strategies aligned with development goals.
  • Partner with leadership to shape strategic vision for volunteer management and launch new initiatives to strengthen community collaboration.
  • Serve as liaison to volunteer boards and councils affiliated with UPMC Hillman; build relationships with volunteer leaders to increase fundraising capacity.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director of Development to design strategies that support key constituencies and strategic objectives.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative metrics; incorporate feedback to improve volunteer engagement outcomes.
  • Work cross-functionally with departments across UPMC Hillman and University of Pittsburgh (e.g., Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement, Public Affairs, Clinical Marketing, Research) to align efforts with community engagement goals.
  • Provide support during peak periods to assist staff and enhance philanthropic impact.
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Effort

Moderate physical effort required to stand/move for several hours at a time. may be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
