Description:

The Statistical Engineer is an individual contributor within the Research and Psychometric Services (RPS) team. This role executes operational duties, provides data management and statistical support on research projects, and manages and develops statistical tools.


The primary responsibility for this role is to execute linking studies, which require sophisticated data management and manipulation, the application of traditional and modern statistical procedures, and the development and interpretation of statistical documentation. This role also provides expert data and statistical support on ad hoc projects for internal and external stakeholders.


As a member of the RPS team, the Statistical Engineer works in high collaboration with various professional researchers, statisticians, and psychometricians. This role works under the supervision of the Manager, Research Analysis.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Execute routine operational linking study tasks with accuracy and precision.
  • Employ data management and statistical analysis across projects with accuracy and consistency.
  • Gather documentation and requirements to understand which data are needed for analysis and reporting.
  • Extract, process, and analyze diverse educational data sources to derive statistical insights under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Contribute to various technical activities, including system infrastructure and interoperability, code modifications and documentation, and performance improvement.
  • Ensure best practices for version control, including automation, branching, merging, committing, code reviews, documentation, and conflict resolution.
  • Support and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure organizational success and efficiency.
  • Stay current with statistical, analytic, and data management technology.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:


Education and/or Experience:

  • An advanced degree in Statistics, Analytics, or a related field is required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in the collection, organization, and analysis of datasets.

Computer Skills:

  • Expertise with the R statistical software, relational database technology (e.g., SQL), and version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Extensive experience with standard office and productivity software (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office).
  • Familiarity with Python, education technology infrastructure and development (e.g., C++, REST APIs), and program management (e.g. Agile) is preferred.

Other Qualities: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals and reports. Ability to respond to common inquiries from researchers, customers, or members of the general public. Ability to write presentations and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to colleagues, management, and/or public groups.
