Physical Requirements
Able to lift/carry up to 80 lbs; work with animals; on feet for long periods of time. Work with swine from 10 lbs up to 350 lbs.
Shift
Monday-Fridays days; required to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays as required for animal care and/or research projects.
Job Summary
This position under the direction of the Research Specialist/Unit Manager/assistant Manager provides the daily animal husbandry to the swine research/teaching herd, maintains the unit’s facilities and provides assistance to faculty and graduate students. Duties include, but are not limited to: distribute feed; handle animals for breeding, farrowing and relocation; monitor animal environment and health; clean animal quarters and equipment; repair animal quarters and equipment; complete the required records and documentation. Must know or be able to learn proper diet for the various ages of swine. Know or be able to learn how to detect “standing heat” and artificial insemination gilts/sows. Know or be able to learn how to assist sows during farrowing. Know or be able to learn how to ear notch, clip needle teeth, dock tails, castrate & inject piglets. Know or be able to learn how to ID swine with a health issue & administer treatment. Recognize environmental issues and correct any problem. Provide after hours care of animals and facilities when necessary.

BS in Animal Science or equivalent; experience with swine. Driver’s License required.
