Brief Description


The Business Director of the Leadership Formation Division (LFD) of Fuller Theological Seminary (FTS) oversees LFD’s finance, accounting, budgeting, controls, and reporting processes and related activities. The Business Director ensures LFD’s financial health and sustainability in pursuit of its mission, vision, and strategic direction. As a member of the LFD Lead Team, the Business Director is a key contributor to the strategic direction of the organization.  


About the Leadership Formation Division


The Leadership Formation Division (LFD) at Fuller Seminary consists of six Centers (Brehm Center, Center for Spiritual Formation, Church Planting Initiative, De Pree Center, Fuller Youth Institute, and Thrive Center), the TENx10 Collaboration initiative, as well as FULLER Equip (an online non-degree training platform for Christian leaders) that collectively provide research-based resources and training to those who want to learn from Fuller, but are not pursuing a degree. Collectively, LFD serves approximately 250,000 learners per year and has an annual budget of $14,000,000.


The Business Director reports to the Assistant Chief of Formation and has four primary areas of responsibility: 

  1. LFD Lead Team Participation

  2. Financial Management 

  3. Accounting Operations 

  4. LFD Support and Expertise


Essential Functions


Leadership Team Participation

  • Contribute to the development of LFD’s vision and strategy in collaboration with the full LFD lead team.  

  • Contribute to the development of LFD’s annual and long-term planning to meet critical mission, income, organizational, and people goals. Assist Centers in developing business plans and financial projections. 

  • Collaborate with other members of the LFD lead team to measure the ongoing effectiveness and performance of the organization in achieving the mission and determining appropriate course corrections as needed.  


Financial Management 

  • In collaboration with the LFD lead team, drive translation of LFD’s mission and strategic priorities to both a longer-term financial strategy and annual financial plans and budgets.  

  • Consult with Center leaders on Center-specific financial strategies and annual financial plans and budgets.  

  • Liaise with Partnership Acquisition & Sales Leader to develop partnership and revenue generating strategies and plans to achieve LFD’s financial performance goals. 

  • Define and maintain an income and expense allocation model that aligns to LFD’s strategic objectives and optimizes financial performance.  

  • Prepare and present accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc financial reports. Provide insightful analysis of financial performance to support effective decision-making and course correction as needed.

  • Monitor financial projections and actuals against budget; recommend action as appropriate. 

  • Identify and monitor risks to financial health and sustainability; recommend action as appropriate.  

  • Identify opportunities for effective cost management; recommend actions as appropriate.  

  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and standards, FTS policies and standards, and any applicable external requirements (e.g., from donors or partners).


Accounting Operations 

  • Serve as LFD’s primary liaison with Fuller’s larger office of Finance and Accounting (OFA), including the CFO and Controller. 

  • Support the financial processes for cross-center functions, including shared grants, revenue sharing, and other new business models. 


LFD Support and Expertise

  • Create and/or support execution of revenue generating models for centers. 

  • Support the development of standardized contracts across LFD Centers.

  • Serve as liaison with HR, OFA, and General Counsel on operational elements of new partnerships. 

  • Provide consultation, financial and business expertise to centers as needed. 


Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s in business or a related field required, MBA preferred

  • 7-10 years’ experience in a business, church, or non-profit setting in a senior business or financial management role.

  • Strong grasp of accounting principles and procedures

  • Ability to build financial plans and create forecasts to enable achievement of strategic and operational objectives

  • Big picture and strategic thinker, adept at problem-solving and able to integrate multiple individual centers business models as well as the needs of the whole division. 

  • Skilled team-builder with ability to work collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated experience working with grants, donors and foundations, and revenue generation.

  • Familiarity with ecumenical church landscape and nonprofit organizations including a commitment to diverse and underserved communities. 

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills required.

  • Ability to translate technical reports and data to decision-ready information

  • Must be willing to abide by Fuller Community Standards

  • This position can either be based on Fuller's Pasadena campus or is available for remote work within the United States. Subject to payroll state approval by Fuller Theological Seminary


Pay Scale: 

  • Annual salary the seminary expects to pay: $85,000 - $90,000 annually USD
