Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and trains part-time employees (student aides).
  • Assures availability of all supplies. This can include locating suppliers, ordering, and coordinating delivery. The Technical Assistant would assume responsibility for entering purchase requisitions to streamline the department process.
  • Sets up lab materials and equipment as required for each course.
  • Maintains records of laboratory schedules and equipment needed and helps coordinate needs and schedules with other department personnel.
  • Assures proper operation of all laboratory equipment. Calibrates and adjusts instrumentation as needed. Troubleshoots and coordinates repairs for defective or inoperative equipment.
  • Maintains designated locations for equipment and supplies and assists in keeping lab spaces clean and organized.
  • Maintains live materials as needed for classroom use.
  • Maintains and organizes preserved materials, fresh materials, slides, and models as required for classroom use and monitors proper disposal after use.
  • Keeps appropriate records as required by OSHA rules, maintains current training in safety requirements, and oversees lab safety procedures.
  • Prepares solutions at defined molar concentrations for laboratory use.
  • Attends departmental and campus-wide meetings as requested.

Greenhouse Duties

  • Water, fertilize, and care for plants according to seasonal and species-specific needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of greenhouse spaces, tools, and equipment.
  • Order and inventory supplies such as soil, pots, fertilizers, and pest control materials.
  • Support community outreach events, tours, or workshops.
  • Coordinate with student clubs or volunteers working in the greenhouse.
  • Monitor and adjust environmental controls (e.g., temperature, humidity, lighting, ventilation) to ensure optimal plant growth.
  • Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to manage pests and diseases.
  • Collaborate with faculty to align greenhouse activities with course objectives.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an Associate's degree or equivalent experience with a foundation in natural science. Biology and Chemistry training. Knowledge of laboratory procedures and operations, especially experience with OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to lift materials weighing 50 lbs.
  • Evidence of organizational skills, ability to plan, organize, and implement several tasks concurrently.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills (interpersonal, speaking, and writing).
  • Evidence of team-centered, participatory work experience.
  • Evidence of experience with personal computers (e.g., word processing) and willingness to learn new systems.
  • Commitment to continued professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree or higher in Biology or a related field from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently.


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity, and college budget. This position has a range of $42,000 to $45,000 and is based on the mentioned factors.
