Position Summary

Ava is seeking to hire a full-time Power Resources Analyst, reporting to Director of Originations, Power Resources. The Power Resources Analyst will play an important role in Ava's objective of bringing clean, affordable power to its customers by assisting in managing Ava's different commodity product portfolios. The Power Resources Originations team is responsible for managing Ava's positions on three commodity products: Resource Adequacy (RA), Renewable Energy Credits (REC) and Carbon Free/emissions (CF). The team enters into short-term, medium-term, and long-term transactions for these commodity products and manages the commodity portfolios to stay within defined tolerance bands for each commodity.

The Power Resources Analyst role will support management of one or more commodity products and will learn the compliance obligations related to that product, eventually taking the lead on regular compliance filings. After developing mastery of one commodity portfolio, the successful candidate may have the opportunity in the future to learn other commodity portfolios.

This role is ideal for an individual who has had exposure to the energy sector and wants to move into a more transactional and analytical role, or an individual who has spent time in a transactional/business/analytical role and wants a role in energy.

Position Details

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Portfolio Management and Analysis: Learn about and monitor Ava's commodity positions, work with consultants or internal experts to develop tools and systems related to commodity position tracking and analysis with the eventual goal of assisting in managing the commodity positions
  • Regulatory Compliance: Collaborate with Ava's managers in the Power Resources team who are responsible for submitting timely and accurate compliance filings in the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and RA proceedings at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
  • Procurement: Issue solicitations and engage in bilateral procurement activities. Ensure procurement complies with Ava's Energy Risk Management Policy. Maintain relationships with power suppliers and other stakeholders.
  • Contract Negotiation: Learn key principles of contract negotiations. Develop functional capability using WSPP and EEI contracting structures.
  • Settlements: Support the monthly settlement and invoice verification process.
  • Report positions to executive leadership and seek feedback and approval from senior leadership on procurement decisions.
  • Respond to data requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support other procurement and compliance activities within the Power Resources team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 2+ years of relevant work experience in energy, utilities, business, mathematics, science, or similar field. A Master's Degree or additional relative course work may be substituted for experience as applicable
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel and PowerPoint) and data visualization tools or related software

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is $106,094, with a Total Compensation of up to $112,459 annually based on performance.

Location and Working Conditions

This position will be based in Ava headquarters in Oakland, near BART. Ava's team has a hybrid approach inclusive of in-office and remote work. This role is expected to go into the office Tuesdays, Thursdays and the first Wednesday of the month.
