Junior Cross Border Controller

Role Outline

The Junior Controller is responsible for monitoring, coordinating, and supporting daily transport operations with a focus on cross-border movements. The role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, facilitates efficient flow of goods, and provides operational support to drivers, clients, and internal stakeholders to maintain service excellence.     

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Transport Planning & Coordination
  • Assist in planning and scheduling vehicles for local and cross-border deliveries.
  • Monitor vehicle routes, driver allocations, and cargo readiness.
  • Track shipments in real-time to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Cross-Border Operations
  • Coordinate with customs agents, clearing houses, and border officials.
  • Ensure all documentation (permits, manifests, waybills, SARS documentation, etc.) is prepared and compliant.
  • Monitor cross-border turnaround times and resolve delays.
  • Operational Control
  • Capture and verify transport data on the system (e.g., trip sheets, PODs, fuel usage).
  • Conduct basic fleet checks (vehicle availability, licenses, maintenance schedules).
  • Escalate deviations (delays, breakdowns, compliance risks) to the Controller/Manager.
  • Compliance & Safety
  • Support adherence to company transport policies, SOPs, and safety standards.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with road transport regulations across borders.
  • Report and document incidents and accidents.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Communicate with drivers regarding schedules, documentation, and operational updates.
  • Liaise with internal departments (Customs, Finance, Warehousing) and external service providers.
  • Provide support to clients on queries relating to deliveries and cross-border status
  • On-time departure and delivery rate (local & cross-border).
  • Accuracy of transport documentation.
  • Reduction of border delays.
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Data accuracy on systems (trip sheets, PODs, expenses).
  • Maintain and update the Combined Load Register daily to ensure accurate tracking of loads.
  • Assist in preparing tracking reports with updates in the mornings and afternoons for the following clients: BJK, Heineken, SMC, Halewood, Carrera, Braford, DHL Reckitt and Kellogg’s, GUD, Coca-Cola, Chester, Yara, WFP.
  • Capture loads accurately in the Load Pad.
  • Ensure the Load Pad is consistently updated.
  • Distribute load consignment notes to transporters.
  • Follow up with transporters regarding loading and offloading schedules, recording relevant times and dates.
  • Document any damages and CHEP slips accurately.
  • Monitor and follow up on outstanding PODs.
  • Provide assistance with queries as required, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
  • Assist in the vetting of export and import documents to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Serve as a weekend operations reliever as needed, ensuring continuity of operations.
  • Provide assistance during leave periods, ensuring their responsibilities are managed effectively.

Qualifications

  • Matric
  • Degree/ Diploma in Logistics/ Transport Management (advantageous).

Experience

  • 1–3 years’ experience in transport/logistics environment (cross-border experience preferred).       
  • Management of people processes and systems                                                                                                
  • Knowledge of customs processes, permits, and cross-border documentation.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, transport management systems).                                                                                                
  • Good analytical and numerical skills                                                                                                      
  • Must be able to document processes in MS Word and have the capability to draw up flow diagrams
