The Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University serves a global community committed to improving public management, leadership, and governance. The Center’s cross-Harvard collaboration unites expertise focused on cities across disciplines and schools to produce research, train leaders, and develop resources for global use. The Center is designed to have practical impact on the future of cities, where more than half of the world’s people now live, by informing and inspiring local government leaders, scholars, students, and others who work to improve the lives of residents around the world.
The Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University is seeking a Senior Director to lead its global communications, engagement, and dissemination efforts. This role will raise the Center’s profile, expand its reach among scholars and practitioners, and promote the use of research-based insights and tools for urban leadership and problem-solving.
About the Role
This position goes beyond traditional communications. It includes developing platforms and channels, fostering communities and networks, and managing strategic partnerships. The Senior Director will work across teams at the Center to highlight the its research, programs, and impact—connecting faculty, students, and city leaders. They will draw on faculty research and tell compelling stories about the impact of mayors and students who work with the Center. This leader will shape a clear narrative that captures the Center’s mission and activities, increases its visibility and brand recognition, and aligns with key partners, including Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 8 years of increasing responsibility in communications and/or public engagement roles.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
The ideal candidate combines strategic thinking with strong tactical execution and a demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality communication and engagement efforts across a range of formats and audiences. They will also possess the ability to perform well across arenas and organizations with different standards, interests, cultures, and practices. They are comfortable working independently and collaboratively, balancing long-term planning with day-to-day responsiveness. With a strong editorial instinct, political and organizational sensitivity, and a relentless commitment to excellence, they can quickly produce clear, compelling content—from practical communications to complex, research-informed narratives. They understand how to build and sustain impactful platforms and channels and have the skills to design and manage all business processes associated with high performing communications systems. They thrive in dynamic environments, bring sound judgment to sensitive issues, and remain calm under pressure.
This position is a fully benefits eligible term appointment through June 30, 2027, with the possibility of renewal.
Work Format Details
This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
Salary Grade and Ranges
