What does a Business Banking Portfolio Manager & Underwriter do?

The Business Banking Portfolio Manager & Underwriter I is responsible for evaluating the underwriting and risk levels associated with the Business Banking Loan Portfolio.  This position focuses on underwriting, structuring, servicing and documenting new and renewal credits. In addition, this role is responsible for identifying, gathering and analyzing relevant information to assess credit risk, establish viability of sources of repayment and determine appropriate loan structures. The Business Banking Portfolio Manager & Underwriter I acts as lead underwriter in collaboration with bankers in preparing credit approval memos with recommendations consistent with bank policy that illustrate well-reasoned analysis. This role performs servicing reviews and supports management of the assigned portfolio to identify and minimize risk to the organization. Provides quality customer service, including participation in joint calls on customers, as needed, as well as guidance to branch personnel.

Manages the underwriting and risk levels associated with the Business Banking Loan Portfolio as illustrated by the following:

  • Manages the annual review of the risk associated with the Business Banking portfolio.
  • Makes decisions and structures all loan requests for the Business Banking Unit within approved authority levels.
  • Coordinates loan closings with Relationship Managers.
  • Offers education and training for Relationship Managers on various credit structures and pricing related issues.
  • Communicate with internal customers to provide support and to resolve issues.
  • Responds to inquiries or requests from other bank personnel, customers, etc., within given time frames and within established policy.
  • Ensuring compliance with operating policies and procedures and outside regulatory requirements.

What is needed to be successful in this role?

  • A B.S. or B.A. degree in a related field normally required, specialized commercial services education and training.  
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience normally required. Knowledge and experience of Business Banking & Commercial Lending preferred. 
  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills
  • Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills
  • A thorough knowledge of the features and benefits of all bank commercial and retail products and services.
  • Technical knowledge sufficient to manage a moderate loan portfolio with noncomplex credits
  • A working knowledge of bank operating policies and procedures which impact commercial services
  • Technical skills sufficient to provide guidance and training to Branch Managers and other branch personnel.

Compensation range:  $77,000 - $90,000

The actual salary offered within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, skills, level offered, and performance expectations.
