JOIN CANNON as a WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR in SAN LUIS OBISPO. San Luis Obispo is on the beautiful central coast of California, has temperate weather, scenic beaches, is surrounded by the wine country, and offers endless recreational opportunities.


PROJECTS INCLUDE Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Collection Facilities, Water Distribution Systems, Water Treatment Plants, Storm Drainage Collection Systems and Facilities, Water Main Replacements, Potable Water Pump Stations and Reservoirs.


WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR JOB SUMMARY

The Water Treatment Plant Operator will support the operation of advanced water treatment systems. This role is ideal for a highly experienced professional who brings deep technical expertise, leadership, and mentorship capabilities to the Utilities Division. The position is part-time as needed for based on project availability.


WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR JOB DUTIES

  • Oversee daily operations of water and wastewater treatment systems, ensuring optimal performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain water and wastewater treatment systems, including pumps, lift stations, pipelines, and advanced treatment technologies.
  • Monitor SCADA systems and advanced treatment technologies, making informed adjustments to maintain water quality standards.
  • Collect and analyze water samples to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal water quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, and records of plant operations and water quality.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and infrastructure.
  • Respond to system alarms, emergencies, and unusual operating conditions.
  • Participate in safety programs and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of experience in water treatment operations, preferably in municipal or coastal environments.
  • Valid California Water Treatment Operator Certification (Grade T3–T5 preferred).
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements (SWRCB, EPA, etc.) and environmental compliance.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, membrane filtration, and advanced water reclamation technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including part-time or on-call as needed.
