ABOUT THE ROLE

As a strategic leader and trusted advisor, the Director of Administration drives the operational excellence of the San Francisco office, shaping its culture, supporting its people, and ensuring seamless delivery of world-class client service. The Director develops strategic plans for future practice and operational needs of the office and anticipates and provides support structures and systems to meet attorney and client expectations. The Director provides collaborative leadership and direction to the office’s partners and employees, coordinating closely with the Office Managing Partner.

  • Provide overall strategic and tactical leadership to ensure that people, operations, and resources align with firmwide priorities and evolving client needs. Serve as a connector between local and global strategy. Provide leadership in addressing current and anticipated needs by developing and deploying effective solutions.
  • Optimize infrastructure and staffing of the office to ensure support is effective, efficient, and evolves with office growth and changing requirements.
  • Influence firmwide functional directions to effectively support office needs by participating in project teams and CAO staff meetings.
  • Provide strategic business and operational advice and expertise to the office partners and firmwide functions.
  • Foster a culture of operational excellence and accountability in managing business processes and activities in support of clients and those served internally.
  • Establish and maintain best-in-class service levels and cost per service standards.
  • With support of the CAO and office partners, ensure that the infrastructure and the business and practice support operations are effectively organized and optimized, and service levels are uniformly high.
  • Develop and implement strategies, tactics, and performance measures to guide employees and managers in delivering effective operational support. Develop management team through effective goal setting, coaching, reviews, and talent management processes.
  • Plan and lead complex projects in support of firm, functional and office strategies.
  • Develop staffing plans and budgets for office consistent with firm objectives and operational requirements. Ensure monthly operational expense performance meets budget.
  • Foster transparent communication and shared ownership through regular office-wide communications to ensure all are kept abreast of significant office and firmwide information.
  • Participate on and provide leadership in firmwide committees and meetings; ensure that office inputs are provided.
  • Develop administrative and managerial business professionals through effective goal setting, coaching, reviews, and development planning.
  • Maintain a working environment that promotes productivity, responsiveness, high attorney and staff morale, motivation, and excellence.
  • Make long range recommendations for future space, facilities, and equipment needs. Provide leadership and expertise in all space planning projects; coordinate with stakeholders to promote client service objectives and ensure minimal disruption to client service operations.
  • Ensure effectiveness of office security programs, and office disaster preparedness efforts.

ABOUT YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least seven years of experience as an Office Manager/Director in a legal or professional services environment, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven record of successful leadership and achievement of results in a variety of roles in a services industry. Proven ability to work collaboratively across organizations in achieving results.
  • Experience in managing a business to the expectations of shareholders, management, and employees.
  • Experience in effectively leading organizations through change.
  • A record of developing management teams to higher levels of performance.
  • A focus on operational excellence, client service, and cost management.
  • High degree of intelligence and a highly organized approach to problem-solving.
  • Outstanding project management and presentation skills.
  • Strong operational and financial skills, and knowledge of information technology practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop administrative staff through effective goal setting, coaching, reviews, and development planning.

Where required by law, salary ranges are stated below. Additional compensation may include a discretionary bonus, overtime as applicable, health/welfare benefits, retirement contributions, paid holidays, and PTO. The range displayed is specifically for positions performed in those cities/states and may vary based on factors including but not limited to the following: local market data and ranges; an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience; and certain degrees, licensing, and certifications.

San Francisco salary range: $250k to $375k
