POSITION SUMMARY

We are currently seeking am Environmental Technician. This position is responsible for operating the industrial wastewater treatment system in a manner consistent with plant policy and the city wastewater discharge permit, to assist tank operators in the cleaning of process tanks and the servicing of chemicals, to handle hazardous waste awaiting disposal, to respond to in-house chemical or hazardous waste spills, and to put away delivered chemicals.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate the wastewater treatment system. Clean and calibrate the pH and oxidation reduction potential (ORP) monitoring equipment. Perform testing for chrome conversion and total chrome discharged to the city sewer. Control rinse tank overflow rates to balance with wastewater processing rates. Operate and clean the filter press and sand filter. Assume ownership of 5S activities in the WWTP area. Drain and assist in cleaning rinse / process tanks as required. Add chemicals to reagent tanks for the wastewater treatment module. Monitor the deionize water generation unit, service chemicals, and activate the regeneration process as required to support production. Respond to in-house chemical or hazardous waste spills to contain, neutralize and clean up such spills. Assist in process tank maintenance such as cleaning, liner changes and pumping of chemicals into disposal trucks. Assist in bulk deliveries of caustic soda by preparing hoses, monitoring the delivery, then cleaning and putting away hoses. Putting away drummed and bagged chemicals when they are delivered. Maintain a logbook of all wastewater treatment activities to be used in reporting to the city and state. To utilize and build skills in Chemical Hazard Communication and related safety training. To accumulate and use technical skills in these areas to: Perform respirator fit tests, conduct Hazard Communication training for new employees, train as a back-up for Chemical Lab testing and inventory and order chemical supplies for the plant.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCES

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prefer minimum one-year experience in wastewater operation and experience in Waste Treatment Record Keeping a plus.
  • 40-hour HazWop Training Certification and/or Wastewater operator’s license preferred.
  • Ongoing training, a minimum of 8 hours each year in EPA RCRA (Resource Conservation Recovery Act) subject matter preferred.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
