Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The NRAO is seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to join the Scientific Information Services (SIS) division to oversee our existing metadata databases and help our software development teams develop new ones to address the challenges of the next generation of radio telescopes, such as the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). Our databases contain operational metadata for telescope monitor and control systems, persistence for web applications and science metadata for on-the-sky observations from 1976 onwards.

The position is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the NRAO headquarters located on the grounds of the University of Virginia, and a telework arrangement may be available for the well-qualified candidate.

You will:

  • Take stewardship of NRAO's collection of Linux-based databases
  • Collaborate and coordinate with our international partners in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to support shared and replicated databases
  • Oversee database server upgrades to keep versions modern
  • Apply modern security conventions to keep data safe
  • Design, implement, and test database disaster recovery policies and procedures
  • Assist System Administrators to configure server performance monitoring, alerts and logging
  • Assist Software Development teams with normalization, optimization and query tuning

Work Environment

The successful candidate will join a team of professionals engaged in research and development in the fields of science, engineering, software development, and education. Work is typically performed in a research or development environment. May occasionally work at high altitudes. Occasional domestic and international travel to other NRAO sites will be required.

Who You Are:

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, scientific or related field; highly relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree.
  • While not required, you may have an advanced degree in a related field.
  • You have six or more years working as a DBA
  • You have experience working with Oracle and PostgreSQL or MySQL

The starting salary range for this position is between $90,015 and $120,000 annually. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include; education, experience, skills, competencies, other qualifications of the successful candidate, as well as internal equity and labor market conditions.
