Overview

Job Title: VMware ESXI Administrator

Location: Portsmouth, VA



Responsibilities

Trace Systems is seeking a VMware ESXI Administrator to support the Norfolk Naval Shipyard CIO department (Code 109), and the associated network capabilities are currently supporting activities that directly contribute to Navy Fleet readiness. Some of the functions supported by the network include automated tools that enhance the warfighter’s ability to execute their mission; support to mission areas such as: Fleet logistics, maintenance, ship industrial and maintenance production activities, engineering, supply, legal, readiness, plans and policy, program planning and management, and personnel; hurricane disaster preparedness and response; world-wide support of bases, the war-fighter, and stations; readiness reporting and support; and securing the Homeland. NNSY CIO is responsible for the installation, administration, development, management, and/or maintenance of all networks and systems installed at NNSY and telecommunication services. The CIO provides IT approval for IT purchases made for and by NNSY. This department ensures that all systems and networks operate in a secure manner by implementing and managing an Information Assurance program that meets all Navy and DoD requirements. The project associated with this position is currently in the proposal stage.

 

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide subject matter expertise in VMware architecture to support the design, implementation, and sustainment of a secure, scalable, and compliant virtualized infrastructure and enterprise Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Support both production and development environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and adherence to strict US Government cybersecurity requirements.
  • Architect, coordinate, and implement VMware/Broadcom virtualization solutions included in the VMware Cloud Foundations (VCF) suite to include: ESXi, vCenter, NSX, vSAN, Aria Operations, and any future virtualization technologies included in the software suite.
  • Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, system monitoring, and optimization.
  • Design and support disaster recovery (DR) and high availability (HA) configurations.
  • Evaluate and support VMware upgrades, patches, and security hardening.
  • Administer and maintain Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), including Group Policies, OU structures, domain trusts, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Provide recommendations on directory service design and best practices for security, replication, and object management.
  • Manage and troubleshoot SharePoint services, including Search, User Profile Service, Managed Metadata, and Workflow Manager. Monitor and analyze ESXI host hardware and software resources including system logs for
    issues; recommending and implementing solutions that correct and improve conditions and optimize efficiency of the system.
  • Ensure the application of Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) requirements to ESXI hosts and effectively communicate configuration details and compliance statuses to other administrators.
  • Build and install computer infrastructure, which encompasses hardware, servers, and virtual machines, using a VMware environment such as vSphere.
  • Verify all ESXI hosts adhere to applicable IA policies and regulations (e.g. Department of Energy/ Naval Reactors) regarding system/network security; and that all required security configurations and controls are properly implemented and protection is commensurate with the assigned National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) IA Level.


Qualifications



  • Active, in-scope US Government issued Top Secret clearance.

  • Due to the nature of the work and contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or higher.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in designing, deploying, and implementing VMware infrastructure components, as well as in-depth knowledge of Windows domain deployment, management, and configuration as it pertains to managing VMware infrastructure and desktop environment components. Examples of relevant experience may include the following:

    • Designing, deploying, and implementing VMware infrastructure components, including ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, and associated management tools, with hands-on expertise in maintaining virtualized environments that support high availability, resource optimization, and secure operations in both development and production settings.
    • Managing Microsoft Windows domain architecture, including Active Directory deployment, Group Policy configuration, and DNS/DHCP services, with a strong understanding of integration and interaction with VMware infrastructure.
    • Creating and administering virtual desktop environments (e.g., Horizon View), virtual machine templates, snapshots, and virtual networking to ensure system stability, scalability, and performance.
    • Configuring and provisioning storage systems (e.g., iSCSI, NFS, VMFS), and performing patch management, data backup, and disaster recovery planning in virtualized environments.
    • Performing capacity planning, system monitoring, and performance tuning to identify and resolve infrastructure issues proactively.
    • Following formal change management processes and maintaining comprehensive documentation in accordance with organizational standards.
    • Communicating effectively with stakeholders and supporting the successful delivery of IT infrastructure projects and operational goals.

Desired Qualifications:

  • VCP in Cloud Foundation preferred
  • Microsoft server certification desired
  • Security+ desired


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in an IT-related discipline or Level II Certification (Security+ or better)
