The DevOps Network Engineer operates at the intersection of network infrastructure, security operations, and automation engineering within Internet2's Network Security Team. This role focuses on developing and maintaining automated security workflows, telemetry systems, and data-driven security solutions that serve Internet2 and the broader research and education networking community. This is a fully remote role.
Infrastructure Automation & Security Integration
- Design, develop, and maintain automated network security workflows and orchestration systems for national research and education networks
- Build and optimize configuration management systems that ensure security compliance across distributed network infrastructure
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices for security tooling and network device configurations
Telemetry & Data Analytics Platform Management- Operate and enhance telemetry collection systems that monitor network security posture and performance metrics
- Develop machine learning pipelines for automated security event analysis and threat detection
- Design scalable event-driven architectures using distributed messaging platforms (Apache Kafka, NATS) for real-time security data streaming
Security Operations & Incident Response- Provide technical expertise for security incident response and forensic analysis
- Maintain 24/7 on-call responsibilities for critical security operations
- Troubleshoot complex issues spanning security systems, network telemetry, and automated analysis platforms
Strategic Development & Cross-Team Collaboration- Collaborate across Network Services departments to align security automation with operational requirements
- Contribute to short-term tactical improvements and long-term strategic security architecture planning
- Stay current with emerging technologies in network security, automation, virtualization, and threat intelligence
Key Technical Focus Areas- Network security automation and orchestration

Required Qualifications- BS in Computer Science (or similar degree) or related experience
- 3+ years' professional experience in DevOps
- Understanding of common network telemetry standards (IPFIX/NetFlow/etc)
- Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and the security implications of design decisions, with hands-on experience in source code management (GitHub/GitLab) and implementing continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD) workflows.
- 1+ years' experience with projects in Python
- Development of software that interacts with networks or similar devices.
- Intermediate Unix System Administration Skills (installing, configuring, patching packages and tools)
- Basic knowledge of container-based packaging (docker, kubernetes, etc)
- Basic knowledge of Security Incident Response/Forensics/Analysis
Preferred Qualifications- Development of provisioning playbooks using a templating system (Jinja2)
- Basic knowledge of cloud provider operations (AWS, GCP)
- Ability to design systems that will be fielded in a production environment
- Exposure to next-generation optical networking technologies, SDN, and NFV
- Automated system or device provisioning and orchestration
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with Streaming Telemetry technologies.
- Experience with event streaming platforms (Kafka, NATS, or similar) including topics/subjects configuration, consumer group management, and performance optimization
- Knowledge of or experience with machine learning technologies.
- Moderately proficient with document editing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
- Excellent Time Management Skills

Salary Range / Pay Grade:$115,200 (Minimum) - $144,000 (Mid-point) / IT-5
Starting pay is typically from the minimum up to the midpoint of the pay range and varies based on experience.
